Will BP be opening up the Plaza with the release of the Beta version on Saturday? Or are you guys going to wait until a final release comes out?
Certainly isn't my place to answer but I would think if the new plaza opens the site to vulnerablilities like the last attempt, we won't be enjoying the release as a beta or final.

But, again, I really don't have any idea about the techno mumbo-jumbo. If it's stable and doesn't open us up, and if C has the time to get it up and running, we'll have it eventually.

I've been watching it, and I've got some concerns. Chief amongst them is that the code is encrypted, would require a change to PHP (adding an ioncube loader), (these next two may be dealbreakers) that the code regularly checks back in with the developer, and is designed to be controlled/operated/patched remotely.

Which is to say we run it locally, but he patches it and controls it at his leisure.

For obvious reasons, even though I respect and largely trust the developer himself, I'm really uncomfortable with the notion of any external command and control over our code and database. If he can take remote control, then that seems like an opportunity for someone else to as well.

Have to admit, I'm really disappointed by this. I would be willing to buy the software if it was self-contained and not encrypted. But even for free, the concerns above really turn me off.

Nonetheless, I'm going to watch the whole thing as other sites install it this weekend, and see how others react and what their experiences are.

This isn't dead in the water yet, but it's not looking as good as it did. I just can't justify adding a 'fun' feature that could jeopardize the core of the site, particularly during the football season -- which was the whole basis for having to take vbPlaza down.

I'm watching it on other sites, and talking to some of those running it. My concerns remain the same -- the code is encrypted, and the author can patch it, deactivate it, and otherwise control and administrate it remotely without so much as a "by your leave" to the sites running it. The developer in question has a good reputation, but I have to be concerned about any extra holes in the blanket.

I wouldn't expect to add something like this during the regular season, but it will be on the table thereafter.

The software remains encrypted (requiring something called an ioncube loader within PHP, which we don't currently have installed), and the authors maintain remote control over the features.

I continue to watch Commerce, but have no immediate plans to try and install it. If tonight's work stops the server crashes entirely, and if future updates to vB and vBSEO are all smooth, then we can at least entertain the idea of making the pretty substantial changes necessary to support this.

It's really unfortunate that it requires changes to PHP, and allows remote control. Those are really the only dealbreakers. Beyond that, it looks like solid, functional, and well supported software. They ought to offer a pay version that doesn't forcefeed the issues that make it (for us) undesirable.
