vBook: Texas Tech vs Texas

Tech's D is much improved, and they always have a puncher's chance with their offense, but Texas should coast in this one. I hope it's a shootout since of I have Hodges on my fantasy team.

Didn't Tech knock off a Top-3 or Top-4 Texas team in 2002? 15.5 points seems like an awful lot to give TTU, and this might be Leach's best TTU team to date.

Sucks that us in Ohio won't be able to get this game ... it'll sure be alot more interesting than the Big XII title game.

no they knocked off a number 12 texas team in lubbock. Last year this game was 52-21(or something of that nature) Two of those touchdowns were in garbage time. VY ran for 5 tds against the red raiders last year and they have already shown to be vulnerable to the run. When this line came out it was at 13.5 and going to be an easy Texas cover, 15.5 should still cover but the back door is now open. I'll go with Texas -the points for v100

Texas 49 Tech 28

That loss in '02 was because Carl Reese, our then-DC, was clueless as to how to defend their offense. Almost cost us the game in '03 as well.

Greg Robinson's gameplan completely shut them down last year.

Now it's Chizik's turn.

I think they put up a few TD's. But I don't think their D is good enough to keep us from scoring 50. Nebraska put up 31 on them. Kansas put up 17 (the same KU that had 93 yards of total offense last week).

This is also Tech's 2nd road game.

I think we cover, but Tech is fully capable of keeping this thing close if we turn it over a few times.

As I felt before the OU game, what has Texas Tech done to deserve any credit this year? Although it might seem a little different b/c Tech is undefeated, they have played three crap ass teams, did okay against Kansas who scored 17 on them with one of the worst offenses in the nation, barely beat a still rebuidling Nebraska, and smacked K-State around. I hope that their shellacking of K-State gives them about as much confidence as OU's shellacking of K-State gave to OU. Also, I figure K-State has less depth than Texas on defense, and we control the ball a little more, so our defense will be much more rested in the second half than K-State's defense was in the second half of their matchup (when Tech scored the bulk of their points, it was 17-13 at halftime).

As for their defense being improved, I don't know what game from this year that you can really point to and say that they have improved their defense, because all of the teams that they have played are pretty damn weak.

But I digress a bit, as Texas Tech always plays this game hard, and usually puts one of their best performances together for this game. The school has several players who were overlooked by Texas recruiting, and about 40% of their student body was probably rejected from UT, so while in no means is this a heated rivalry, the Red Raiders want nothing more than to beat-up their big brother in Austin. So I will predict that Texas covers by one point. :wink2:

You're preaching to the choir. See my explanation for my Top 25 in the BP Poll thread and I say exactly as much about TTU and why I have them ranked so low against where most others' are ranking TTU.

I only point out that I remembered TTU beating UT in Lubbock in 2002 because it demonstrates that such an upset would not be without precedent. I'm not suggesting that 2005 TTU can even hang with 2005 UT, and this isn't made any easier with the game in Austin. It's just that TTU can give anyone fits if the ball bounces their way, and certainly more bizarre upsets have happened in CFB.

I know that anything is possible, the year after 2002 they almost beat us in Austin, they missed a 48 yard field goal that would have sent it to OT at the end of the game. We actually brought in Chance Mock to sub for Vince Young that day.

The only other thing that gives me confidence, is that last year we wiped the floor with them and our DC preached a bend don't break style defense which allows a team like Tech to run wild, and we still held them to 21 pts.

This year our Defensive speed and DC have greatly improved our defense as a whole, so I can definitely see us limiting Tech to less points than last year.

As EH said a few posts ago. The loss in 02 and the close game in 03 can be directly linked to carl reese. He was the only person i have ever seen line up his MLB over center and ask him to "show blitz" and then not bail out or at least shoot a gap. I guess if lavar arington or andy katzemoyer(sp?) or some other beast is playin MLB you might have a chance but reed boyd(our mlb at the time) was horrible. We mugged our lbs all game and played man on man against that playstation offense. Last year when Robinson employed a Zone defense and NFL sceme we shut them down allowing 21 points with at least one of those td's in trash time. Tech's biggest weakness this year has been picking up blitzes and Chizik has proven to be one of the most inovative dc's in the nation. We will be fine. Covering will not be a problem unless we are backdoored.
