vBook: Fresno St vs USC

I can't believe you guys aren't all over this one. Stanford got twice this action with only an extra TD.

Hey Thomps, you think you guys will have your hand full or do you think this will be a walk in the park.

They had the Fresno coach on tv the other night and he said the guys were not looking at it like they had nothing to lose, they were looking at it as a chance to show the nation just how good they really are. I for one think that they could hang for the first half, but just won't have enough depth and the USC O' will take over in the second half and win by about 21.

I will preface this by saying that Fresno can not hang with USC if USC comes out prepared. USC is too talented and too well-coached. They are too tough in the Coliseum and in November.

Going into the season, one advantage I thought USC would have was depth. Most of Fresno's shockers have come early in seasons or in bowls where depth is less of an issue. I assumed that both teams would come into the game with injuries and that SC would be better equipped as far as backups.

The season just hasn't gone that way. USC has dealt with injury after injury on defense while Fresno seems to have been very fortunate this season. I'm not an expert on Fresno's roster, but the only starter I know to be out is their kicker. USC on the other hand...

starting SLB out, 2nd-string SLB out, starting MLB limited, starting RCB out, 2nd-string RCB limited, defensive waterboy out.

Fresno is a very balanced team. Their offense is balanced well in that they can run and pass effectively. Their defense is above average to good, especially at DE and in the secondary. Their special teams are amazing. They are dangerous in the return, and they've only given up 24 punt return yards all season (a ridiculous stat).

They share the identity of thier coach, Pat Hill. Hill is nasty, but not in a negative way. He is tough and he isn't afraid of anyone. He is a big game coach, and knows how to pull an upset.

This is the biggest game in the history of their program. They beat USC in the Freedom Bowl in 92, and they replay that game in their neck of the woods practically every day. They are the #16 team in the country, and their only loss is to #10 Oregon. They've been waiting for this game for a long time. They're all over Los Angeles today.

Pete Carroll has said for a long time that this is probably the most dangerous game on the schedule (not to be confused with the toughest team). He has been saying it privately to boosters and clubs all season. He's been saying it publically ever since the Cal game was done.

It will come down to whether the USC players listen to him or whether they just see a WAC team.

It's Michigan week. No time for side shows.

Is that like a really important game for you guys?
