Van Halen to be the next band on "Rock Star"??

^^^This^^^

While I really liked a number of their songs with Sammy, Diamond Dave as the OG can’t be beat.
Van Halen came along when I was in 5th or 6th grade and it was when I started listening to new music that was outside of the mainstream, To me those first 4 album were the real Van Halen. 1984 was an epic success and to be fair a great album from beginning to end but that was really the last true Van Halen record. The stuff with Sammy is good but to me, not Van Halen. They should have changed their name.

Disagree on the name change but completely agree on the first 4 albums being a different beast than everything else that followed.

I just chalk it up to the brothers maturing/evolving style and leave it at that. 1984 and after was full of some really great music but nothing is going to keep sounding like those first four efforts.

My .02 on Sammy vs Dave is that Sammy is a true, elite professional rock singer and Dave couldn't sing for shit but they both worked for their time with VH. At the end of the day Eddie made VH. He was the true generational talent. Alex was elite himself and the way he and Eddie could play together was probably the second most important thing. Michael Anthony, Dave and Sammy could have all been other guys and you would still know the name Van Halen.

Agreed Jax. Dave was the better 'front man', as his voice was sufficient, but his on stage charisma was off the charts. Eddie VH is one of my top three guitarists (along with Jimmy Page and Carlos Santana) ever. Didn't catch the first four difference, but must not be the conneseur that you are....Loved the MTV of VH.

Van Hagar > Van Halen.

As previously stated, dave was a great front man for his time - and Sammy was really good. Dave’s voice wasn’t close to Sammy’s however. And Sammy in his 70’s sounds better than dave in his 30’s.

I was also a Sammy fan well before he joined Van Halen so there’s that. Dave solo stuff was really good too after he left.

It’s not a hill I would ever die on. Personal preference of songs and sounds - give me Sammy led VH.

Dave’s a famous dick head and Ed and Alex are notorious for being hard to work with. Amazing actually that they were able to do as much as they did.

That's probably where the personal preferences lie. I never cared for Sammy Hagar and it just didn't sound like "Van Halen" anymore, to me.

I didn't dislike everything they did with Sammy, it just felt like a different band hired Eddie to play lead guitar. Sad we'll never see him play again.

Fun thought experiment... Since most people prefer the first versions of the bands they've heard... Would you prefer Van Hagar over Van Halen IF .... Sammy was with them for the first few albums.... whatever those albums may be.... because I don't think Hagar is coming up with "hot for teacher" or "Panama" ....

Interesting but impossible to think of.

That means no albums that VH currently have in their catalog would ever exist. So it would be a huge unknown. I’d imagine VH with Hagar in the late 70’s early 80’s would sound like some of the Montrose type stuff or maybe more like the Sammy solo standing Hampton album. but heck my brain hurts to even think about it. Haha.

I’ll enjoy both.

I think you got the gist of it... you know what Van Halen sounds like and you know what Solo Sammy sounded like during the same time.... kinda mesh those two together.... Yeah that's one of those comments that goes in the "r/Showerthoughts" subreddit.

I agree that Sammy was a true rock star while Dave ended up being a novelty act afterward if not a joke. He came out strong out of the gate though with his EP, the cover of California Girls and Just a Gigolo. His first two solo albums were strong too, his hits Yankee Rose and Going Crazy from the first one then his album Skyscraper and some good song. Meanwhile it took me a while to get used to Van Hagar, when I first hear 5150 my heart sunk. It just wasn't Van Halen anymore to me. Those first four albums were just so good, so raw and no one else sounded like them. I don't begrudge them for wanting to go mainstream and cash in but the selfish side of me wished they'd kept that alternative sound. Same with metallica, when the black album came out I was pretty much through with them, the on ly other album of theirs that I bought after that was the Garage days album.

That's how it was for me, it was more like Sammy Hagar with Van Halen as his backing band. They adopted his sound instead of Sammy adopting theirs. To be honest I never bought a Sammy Hagar record in my life though I like some of his older songs.

Couldn’t say it any better. We’ll put.

Garage band VH was the unicorn (and best) When I was younger (just like them) I was virulently anti-Van Hagar. I took a girl to a 5150 concert to get laid. I knew even then that if chicks were into it, it had gone soft and mainstream as hell.

Thea days, as I’ve aged like fine wine () o can finally listen to Sammy fronted stuff and enjoy/appreciate it.

The thing Sammy doesn’t get enough credit for, imo, is Montrose. They did American metal 10+ years before anyone else knew what it would sound like. So while I’m not a huge fan of the Red Rocker, I damn sure respect him.

Yes, Bad Motor Scooter and a few other oldies are definitely part of Hard Rock history, Rick Springfield had a hit with one of Sammy's older songs, I've Done Everything For You but he's always been to me anyway one of those guys that has a few good songs but no album that I can sit and listen to from beginning to end.

I own every solo album ever put out. I’m a redhead and part of the club! Proudly.

Of course I’m biased as we all are generally. I didn’t grow up with old Van Halen. But I did buy the 1984 album which was mind blowing to me as a 14 year old.

I was listening to REO Speedwagon and Journey and stuff like that when I was 10 ish I guess. My mom only listened to country so I heard mac davis and glen Campbell on 8 tracks for a long time. Ha

My mom also liked Mac Davis, Glenn Campbell, Anne Murray... Luckily we always had radios playing almost everywhere in the house, bathroom, garage, I had one in my room plus a pretty dent record player that my dad bought from a yard sale. I pretty much started hearing music from the cradle onward. The first songs I remember listening to as a kid were songs like Everything is Beautiful by Ray Stevens, Tie a Yellow Ribbon by Dawn, Knocking on Heaven's Door... Music has helped me to remember my life chronologically by what was playing on the radio at the time. I fight it astounding how so many people can't remember dates let alone years. I was talking to an older woman at work, she was talking about Jimmy Carter and couldn't even remember which decade he was president.
