VAIO Screen Flickering. Help?

OSU_Buckguy

Head Coach
I've had a Vaio for about two years now. I know; it's a lifetime. The notebook has been running well, except for the screen's flickering now and then. After flickering for a few seconds, the screen will go black and the computer must then be restarted. Sometimes it takes a few restarts for the computer to return to normal. Also, the flickering generally occurs right after booting up the computer. Only rarely will it flicker after the computer has been on for at least a few minutes.

The flickering and necessary rebooting is mostly an inconvenience; however, I do worry that one day the screen will flicker, turn black, and never come back on.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It could be one of a couple things, but first things first, do you have a warranty on it?

Good question. Having moved around so much during the last couple years, I wouldn't know where it is if I did still have a warranty. The notebook was a gift, and I don't think that there was purchased an extended warranty. I could check, but I'm not hopeful about still having a warranty.

ok.....well it could be a couple things here...

It could be that your video card is going. I don't think that would cause it to lock up but you never know in the wonderful world of Microsoft...

It could be the connection to your montior from the base of your laptop. In which case if you have another computer monitor and VGA cable, you could try it that way....I'd lean this way first. Without any hands-on time with the laptop that is :)

Otherwise it might be time to find a computer repair guy. Wish I could help more. I don't think it's a software issue, I'm pretty sure it's a hardware thing....

I would say it sound like the cable from the screen to the vid card is loose, but a reboot shouldnt fix it if that is the case. Someone mentioned hooking it up to an external monitor.........that is a good call. Try that and see if it does it with an external monitor as well. If it does, then you know it's either the vid card or the cable. That would be my bet.
