USC Trojans (official thread)

I'm just gonna put this out there.

For 90% of the USC fan's that weren't actuall 'fans' until 03, your going to have a very grim reminder of what the Hackett days were like soon enough; and people such as myself are going to enjoy watching the ego's tumble back to earth. Think this season was unbearable? - Enjoy the next 5 years.

I actually think that Carroll leaving will be a good thing for USC providing their best recruits don't jump ship after he leaves. I think his act was getting kind of stale there and he knows that his stock is only going to drop the longer he stays. They have enough talent returning even with the early departures to compete next season and if they get a good coach, watch out.

Well, that's a unique perspective. I'll give you that. But, I don't see how anybody can repeat his success. He was arguably (with a nod to Urban, Mack and Saban) the best recruiter in the game. There will be a dropoff there. If you think LA and USC can sell itself, remmeber that USC was largely irrelevent on the national stage for most of two decades before Petey got there. Carroll was the perfect fit for that program and what it was selling. I don't think they'll find that very easily. I certainly don't think Riley , if he is there target, will do it. I don't think they'll fall off as hard as the pre-Petey era, but I think their days as the undisputed top dog out west are over.

Carroll knew this year would be a rebuilding year going in, regardless of NFL aspirations. Oregon, Arizona, Cal, Stanford and UCLA are going to jump on 2011 recruits like sharks on chum. USC will be competetive, but they won't be a juggernaut, in part b/c Petey was a defensive minded coach in an offensive league. USC's D will take a step back from recent years. I certainly can't see how this is a good thing for USC-not that I care-I'm enjoying watching the mess.

Oregon State must really be worried:

Oregon State tries to fend off USC

Oregon State athletic director Bob DeCarolis is prepared to offer football coach Mike Riley a lifetime contract to remain at the school as a preemptive move against any offer USC could make to Riley if Pete Carroll does leave for the NFL next week, according to a report in the Oregonian.
"Mike's said he wants to be the Joe Paterno of Oregon State," DeCarolis told the Oregonian. "So we'll put something together to make [his contract] a lifetime deal."
