The satanic soulless freight train that is Ohio St
  • When I went to the game this past Saturday decked out in my #10 road jersey, I expected to catch all kinds of shit, abuse, and insults from the masses of cardinal-clad heathens. I could not have been more wrong. BB73 and I arrived outside the front of the stadium (Figeroua St.) just after 10:00 am, not far from the ESPN College Gameday set. From that time, through 6+ hours of tailgating, throughout the game, and the whole walk back out to Figueroa St. after the game to catch our ride back, not once--not once--did I hear a single "Fuck Ohio State!", "Ohio State sucks!", or "We're gonna kick/we kicked your asses!" The worst face-to-face comments we got the entire day were from the guards where we were initially dropped off at Figueroa St., who said "No Buckeye fans allowed here" then proceded to laugh and let us in. The worst anti-OSU sign I saw all day was a not-very-original "Suck eyes" sign being held up by a Hispanic kid about 13-14 years old in a small group. When I walked up to them and said, "You may think we suck, but you can't spell 'suck' without 'USC'", they laughed. I even said "Suck eyes" wasn't very original, and they should try "Luck eyes" or "Slowhio" next time...they actually thanked me for the idea. I had several folks reach out a hand and wish me a good game.

Conversely, I did see several Buckeye "fans" shout shit like "Fuck USC", and "USC sucks", which was embarrassing as shit. I can only fear how fucking bad we're going to look next year when thousands of fans around The Shoe on game day rain obsceneties down on any and all USC fans in their midst. I sure hope our fans show half the class that USC fans displayed throughout the entire day.

Unfortunately, I've almost had encounters with our own "fans" in Columbus when I intervened and told them to stop acting like idiots.

I'm beginning to think it's a regional thing, in terms of fan behavior. Of course, we're talking a minority, but it only takes a few idiots to make the entire fan base look bad.

I've been to road games throughout the country, pro and college, and the worst treatment I have received - by far - has been in Pennsylvania.

You were with BB73. People are reticent to talk smack to the obviously insane for fear of personal safety.

Try it again by yourself and see what happens.

Glad to hear you were treated well over there. Aside from the outcome, that can make you feel a little better when people aren't being dickheads.

As for tOSU fans, I would have to say we have some of the most emotional fans out there so I can't really make any promises for next year on our behalf.

Getting treated like shit at a game sucks, especially when you lose. The "White-out" night bullcrap at Penn State in '05 left me pretty scarred as a 16 year old fan who had been to games in Happy Valley for almost ten years and treated very well prior to that night. Was not fun.

But as all of the posters and radio commercials and pre-game scoreboard clips say, "Let's show our visitors we are the best fans in the land."

I'd say it also has to do, at least in part, with what our team means to us. In L.A., it's the "thing to do" when they're winning, not so much when they're not. Like that article before the game saying how during USC's down years, the Coliseum would be half full. When's the last time The 'Shoe was half filled for one game? Let alone a few year stretch. Fuck, TSUN is going to suck balls this year, and I bet they still show.

In no way does this excuse the rude behavior, but I tend to give a little more leeway to more passionate fanbases. I expect to catch shit from conference rivals.

I think you guys underestimate the number of douchebags that root for the Buckeyes. They make the rest of us look bad.

I thought the USC fans were amazing. Before the game I did not hear a peep and there was lots of tailgating together. The only time I heard anything negative was after the game by people driving by in cars. Even then, it was pretty muted.

    Wow. Really?
I wouldn't have guessed that in a million years. Was this for Pro or College games?

Not speaking for them, but PSU fans have been known to get nasty. Throwing (bags?) of urine at our band.

Wisconsin used to stuff batteries in marshmallows and chuck them at the team when they left the field.

    Both.

I walk into visiting venues quietly, but I wear team colors. I haven't gone to a Steelers or Penn State game without at least a couple of drunks getting in my face, cursing, trying to start a fight, etc..

It's amazing what beer and strength in numbers can do for the size of someone's balls. :roll1:

Not to mention the Youtube video of the State Penn fans throwing beers at the OSU fans.

Eh, for the most part I had good experiences with the USC fans. Had one encounter with a somewhat aggressive male that took exception to me cutting close in to their canopy to get to the road to meet a BPer. Gave me shit on the way back too, meh. The people in his tailgate gave him frustrated looks at the same time.

After the game was the single poor experience, and that was someone yelling out a car "Overrated!" at my walking husband, and spitting at him. There's always gonna be a few, wherever you go, in any fan base.

Yeah, I agree Mili, the fans there were, for the most part, really cool. Even when we sat down I went back and forth with a couple fans, but after the game started everyone was pretty cool to deal with. I think the worst I really heard at the tailgate was someone saying they hope I have a great time at the party but a horrible time at the tailgate.

Though when I went and go the chairs, I did see Penn State rolling around with Anti OSU signs, one holding up a sign that read "OHIO IS NOT A REAL STATE" Which I still can't figure out what that's supposed to mean.

Pretty classy bunch IMO, I was expecting the old Raiders fans and couldn't have been more wrong.

As for the urine, yeah that happened. And some of it was not in bags or any other sort of container.

When I was there I got beer dumped on me, spat at, and pushed to the ground. Fortunately for me one of the guys I was with was a former PSU player (big) and he threw the dude into a trashcan. Made me laugh.

But yeah, PA can get that way. PSU or the Steelers.
