USC -21.5 at Hawaii (ov/un 54.5) Thurs 11 pm ET, ESPN

As horrendous as SC's defense was tonight I'm going to reserve judgment until I see them on the mainland against a less complicated offense to defend. It almost looked like the game in Eugene last Halloween. I must say that their offense looked great even if it was Hawaii. Tyler is going to be a good one.

The defense is going to be a problem for them. I see them as an 8 or 9 win team. Their offense will allow them to hang with anybody, but a few teams will exploit them and they'll probably lose a game or two they shouldn't. Also of note, they have no bye week all year. With just seventy scholarship players, that could be an issue when players start getting dinged up.

588 yards allowed. :yow1:

I love how ESPN has the headline on the front page as "USC begins a new era by hanging 49 on Hawaii." But ESPN fails to mention the fact that they also gave up 36 points.

Their defense is already a lot worse than I thought. How will it be if injuries strike? PAC10 teams will go up and down the field on them putting even more stress on the offense to score. 9-3? That may be optimistic.

That'll be a good defense if they ever learn how to tackle. A lot of times they were in the position to make the play, they just missed the tackle. Their secondary did get burned pretty bad a few times, especially that freshman cornerback. What surprised me was after Hawaii's starting QB came in the 2nd and 3rd stringers were making plays too.

Even though it was Hawaii I also was impressed with this kid. Big, had a good burst and ran through contact.

USC will have a good ofense and score 35 or so, but like others said they're not gonna win more than 9 games with that D.
What impressed me was that he stuck to running north-south. Too many backs try going around the corner when there's nothing there and a lot of times lose yards. He also has some good juke moves making people miss. I can see now why
he was the top rated running back of his recruiting class.

I'm not going to put much stock in this effort by the USC defense. Last night was the first time they did any tackling (if you can even call what they did tackling) all year. They've only got 70 scholarship players now. They did not do live tackling in any practices this summer from what I had heard, as they couldn't risk any injuries.

They did live tackles, but in lieu of the second practice in two-a-days they had a pads and shorts walkthrough to avoid the risks inherent.

USC will not be in the Top 25 at the end of the year. Might not be a far stretch but I'll put money on it.

That's a safe bet in the Coaches poll.

And I'm wondering if those who are saying they won't win 9 games (or will only win 9 games) realize that they play 13 because of the trip to Hawaii.

Sept. 2 @ Hawaii
Sept. 11 Virginia
Sept. 18 @ Minnesota
Sept. 25 @ Washington State
Oct. 2 Washington
Oct. 9 @ Stanford
Oct. 16 California
Oct. 30 Oregon
Nov. 6 Arizona State
Nov. 13 @ Arizona
Nov. 20 @ Oregon State
Nov. 27 Notre Dame
Dec. 4 @ UCLA

I still think they go 8-5 or 9-4. In past years, they would have ape raped Hawaii 70-10, this year, they actually allowed them to stay in the game. Depth is going to be an issue. I think they start 4-0, but every game from October on is going to be tough. Their starters are gonna have to play a lot of minutes, and without a bye week to rest at all, they're gonna wear down as the season goes on.
