Agreed - but they punched Portugal and Mexico in the nuts and hung with S. Korea at their national stadium. Guts and heart man, I loved that 2002 team.

Even the old timers like Cobi Jones came in and made "balls to the wall" type runs.

My favorite team of all time in the sport, and sadly that might be our best result for the next 100 years, from the looks of it.

Perfect set pieces and plays. Lack of basic fundamentals, still. It's sad when the announcers bash the lack of even the most basic fundamentals, pick a man and mark him, you learn that when you're 8. This game from the start was just lack of preperation and desire, that's on the coach. I don't see any leadership they did in the past with their captains. Donovan talks it in interviews, but doesn't actually do it.

Well, it starts with skill. There's hardly an individual player that would make a top squad's roster. The US lacks players that can sustain possession either through dribbling or midfield passing. Next the US lacks a quality attack. They don't develop very good forwards. We suck at finishing goals. Actually, we struggle to even create many goal-scoring opportunities in the run of play (mainly, the final 1/3rd of the field). Most goals scored by the US are off set-pieces (corners, free kicks, and penalty kicks).

The US is known primarily for their goalkeeping. Never really been an issue (at least since U.S. Soccer became somewhat relevant).

Also, the defense has usually been solid, at least as a unit.

It's really the attack/offense that has been behind. The US often relies on gritty, defensive, workmanlike performances and then capitalize on a couple opportunities (penalty in the box, counter-attacks).

This team against Brazil today looks incompetent. They can't trap passes, they can't string together any possession, they can't defend (just sticking their legs out, not actually moving with the player and waiting to dive in). They look scared. That mentality comes from the top. Bradley went out with a shitty lineup. Where's Adu? He's a brilliant offensive player, who cares if he can't defend (sort of a lame excuse, he's gotten better). This is an exhibition tournament, go out there and try to win.

Time for some new blood at manager. International teams get new coaches all the time. US needs someone to come in and take the team to the next level. The talent is getting better and better each year. Bradley doesn't know how to play to this team's skillset, we have players in the US Player Pool that can have the technical ability (dribbling, passing, shooting) to compete with these top teams. They aren't getting PT and instead sit behind old veterans and a shitty system.

So frustrating to watch US Soccer come so far, then go out and lay an egg against Brazil.

I thought they played well against Italy. They matched them for the first 30 minutes, then even scored in the next 10 minutes playing down a man. But in the end 60 minutes of playing 11v10 is tiring and Italy are the defending champs.

Now, this team is lost. This last month of matches has been awful. The team has lost its psyche, grit, confidence, etc. They need a lot more work. Changes need to be made somewhere. Either coaching tactics, player tactics, mentality, formation, actual players, something. The current formula is not working and will get the team embarrassed on a national stage next summer.

I still have hope. I know the players are there. Altidore, Adu, Donovan, Howard, Bocanegra, 'Gooch, Bradley Jr, and I'm forgetting others...these guys are good, they really are. But something isn't right, at the moment

They look competent in the early going of the 2nd half. Still not gonna be good enough. Down two to Brazil.

Also, this team is missing one of its heart and soul out there, the gritty Frankie Hejduk. That guy hustles and hustles and hustles some more. That's part of what is missing. Wouldn't change too much, but maybe.

Agreed. But not likely to happen. I doubt FIFA takes away something that is such a big part of the host nation's culture.

 US gets another red card in a big match. Shocking. They are so reckless and play like idiots on the big stage.

guess i'm not the only one. the announcers were just complaining about them. they also said banning them for the world cup is under serious consideration. thank god.

ESPN could lower the volume of those horns easily. I'm pretty sure the announcers aren't in South Africa, they're just talking over the same int'l feed that we're seeing. They could lower the volume from the feed, and add their commentary. In fact, they sound a little quieter than they did yesterday, but maybe I'm just getting used to ignoring the background noise.

We talked about them some in the overall Confederations Cup thread.
