USA needs scorers."
"And there's a gritty "American" goal. Not pretty but it's in the net."
From seeing the two goals, and not the game, seems like that's exactly what we got in the scoring department. Altidore fought hard, and Dempsey persisted. Not pretty goals, though Altidore's move to set up the shot was skillful, the shot itself was not world class; but it didn't matter because he and the US team fought hard enough to score. They were "gritty" enough and capitalized when they needed too. Same with Dempsey, the pass found its way through and he was able to finish on the bad touch.
But here's the thing. I haven't had a chance to see any game footage besides the two goal highlights, which is all ESPN would ever show, never actual game footage or other missed chances and set ups, or any great move and footwork or through ball or cross, or sorry I digress... Having not seen game footage, the tale of the tape is a hard read. With the match stats like the US giving up 11 total shots with 6 on goal, I'm floored by the outcome, I was floored before I saw the stats, but that is a good number of shots on goal. The US only had a total of 4 shots which isn't surprising playing the number 1 ranked team, but there is still a complete lack of scoring chances; what ultimately mattered was that the two on goal fully crossed the line for the lead and to extend it. Spain also had 3 times as many corners as the US, so seeing that stat doesn't seem to me like the US even had enough offensive pressure to create them, or to create shots.
It's a great win, and one for the US to say "hey, we did it. Fuck off." But the US still has a long way to go to be a a 5 star international team. It's not a knock on the US or their performance, and I'm as proud as anyone to have our guys win this, it just tells me they played with heart and won a hard fought match even though they really are not the better team. That happens, and hustle and heart can win games over talent sometimes. We'll see how the US does in the Final against whomever they play be it Brasil or SA, but the true test will be next summer in the World Cup. Let's hope that this helps evolve the mind set of the team.
I know that BN27 says the number are mostly skewed, and I take that into consideration as I haven't seen any game footage yet, I just find it interesting to see such a contrast in the figures of the stats. to a great win, and hoping for a very entertaining final.
