Or they've counseled him to go dark and let this ride out until the suspension is over but simply can't control him at this point. As much as it might grind their gears, they're not going to fire him over these tweets, yet they also have no obligation to wade into the storm of his choosing by his side.

It's clear Urban had a majority of trustees against firing at the meeting. After the press conference and the tweets, I'm not so sure the result would be the same now.
Christ man.

Why do you think this is the university directing him to put this out? This seems like Urban obsessed with protecting Urban's reputation and legacy. It so utterly serves the university no purpose that I can't fathom they'd have a hand in it.

Maybe but personally I think you are reading way too much into it. Simple answer is usually closest to the truth.

The man has a brand/reputation to protect. The university's handling of this has left him no choice but to do it himself.

One guy's "have to protect my good name" is another man's "his ego is out of control".

Urban's next pay raise is going to be a big one.
That pay raise won't be coming anytime soon, until the dust settles on this mess. No way in heck is a raise even thought about, until we're far away from this saga, and enough wins have quelled the masses wanting for blood. The best we can hope for, is for everyone involved (the admin, BoT, Urban, all the coaches, ZS) to just stop talking about the matter all together and focus on the 2018-2019 football season. This can be moved past, but you need to silence all involved, and almost always works(Bama has done it many times, Ped St, Baylor, UF in the Meyer days, Da U, etc)

If the pay raise doesn't come from OSU, it might come from another school.

I doubt a school will touch Urban if he keeps tweeting, and if they do, then it will be a very very rocky hire with a ton of roadblocks. I'm just saying, if they keep talking about this, it won't go away and will only build steam.
