Anybody try out the Urban Meyer Pint House? I'm flying back the weekend of the Iowa game and trying to get tickets if possible, but am staying in Columbus for a couple nights. I would like to check it out but since I have limited time back, want to make sure it's worthwhile.

I've been once. It was very busy (this was pre-corona) and I ended up eating at the bar rather than waiting on a table. The food was fine, but I don't recall it as being otherwise remarkable. Liked the atmosphere, for sure, and the staff was pleasant. It seems a decent cross between sports bar and sit down... something like a snazzier BW-3

“I think a lot of it is that they value that position so much and in moving guards from center, they want someone vocal and who really knows the offense at center, making sure everybody is doing the right things,” Myers said before the Rose Bowl in 2018, before he ever started a game for the Buckeyes. “That’s why Pat [Elflein] did it, that’s why Billy [Price] did it, that’s why Mike is there now. … I didn’t ever think I would move to center. But I love it, I absolutely love center, it’s the best position I’ve ever played.

“The transition was a little rough at first. That first spring when I first started playing center, man, there’s just so much mentally coming at you. And I think I was probably lacking physically, too. I was so worried about making sure everything was right mentally, I wasn’t performing physically. Once I finally got some of that down, I started playing a lot better.”

Meyer accomplished it all, making him the only reasonable choice as the Big Ten's coach of the decade.

SAGE ADVICE. 2020 is proving that Urban Meyer picked one hell of a time to toss the sticks to Ryan Day, but just because he's not in the game anymore doesn't mean the coaching legend – and birthday boy! – doesn't have some sage wisdom to impart.



2020's been a shit show, but it's also brought us the end of the Urban Meyer return to coaching speculation, and I am grateful for that.

Urban Meyer ranks top five modern CFB coaches

Urban Meyer knows a thing or two about coaching at the college football level. That’s probably why FOX Sports asked him to put together his top five list of the best coaches to lead a program today on ‘Big Noon Kickoff.’

When assessing players or coaches in team sports, Meyer weighs championships the most. He made that very clear right off the bat.

“We all play team sports for a number of reasons,” Meyer said. “The No. 1 reason, in my belief, is to win a championship.”

The legendary Florida and Ohio State head coach revealed a historical list of his top five coaches, but he finished by ranking the best coaches to run programs in modern college football. Meyer used five factors to determine exactly who those coaches were. The five criteria involved were culture, recruiting, leadership, ability to inspire, and strategy.

Using that as his guide, Meyer came up with his list. The top two coaches aren’t much of a surprise, but the legendary coach did admit that he had trouble placing Nos. 3-5. That trio is very similar and have yet to break through for a national title.

1. Nick Saban | Alabama
2. Dabo Swinney | Clemson
3. Kirby Smart | Georgia
4. Lincoln Riley | Oklahoma
5. Ryan Day | Ohio State

In Meyer’s eyes, Smart, Riley, and Day are all in the same boat right now. All three are clearly very gifted young coaches. However, they have all fallen just short of college football’s greatest prize. Now it’s just a matter of seeing which one can win the last game of the season first.

“I could put Ryan Day at No. 3 and feel very good about it,” Meyer said. “I think those three — along with Kirby Smart and Lincoln Riley — are interchangeable. They’ve not won a national title. They’ve been on the doorstep. They’re right there, but I just think Kirby Smart, right now the SEC’s the best league in the country. Lincoln Riley, what he’s done at 12-2 for three or three years in a row. Ryan Day is 16 of 17 with arguably the best team in America coming back.”

Meyer finished by repeating his point about championships. To him, it’s all about the hardware in the trophy case.

“Just always remember one thing,” Meyer said. “In my mind, you are measured in championships."

URBAN MEYER WEIGHS IN. We already know that if there's a spring college football season, Shaun Wade ain't playing. And it sure sounds like that's the advice Urban Meyer would give any other player in a similar circumstance.

Urban Meyer doesn’t have to face the problem that many of his coaching contemporaries could in the upcoming months. The former Ohio State head coach doesn’t envy the situations they might be dealing with, especially if college football moves to the spring.

In that scenario, many talented players with potential pro futures would face a hard choice: stick with their teams or punt on the season to begin early prep for the 2021 NFL draft.

“It'd be hard for me not to advise them and tell them to play,” Meyer told Yahoo Sports. “To play in spring and then go play in OTAs in the National Football League, that’s not fair.”

“If you have a chance after you fulfilled your commitment to a university to go and earn a living playing football,” Meyer said, “I don’t know if I’d advise a guy to play a spring season before going to the NFL draft."

I think the thing we never really address here is that nobody *wants* to have to sit out the season. It's not like these guys are sitting at home hoping that the season is moved to the spring so they don't have to play.

Wade came back to Ohio State because he's barely played a college snap at the position he's asking NFL teams to draft him to play. If he doesn't have at least some game film of him playing outside, his draft stock is not going to be what it should be, regardless of how many others choose to sit.

But hey, these are bridges we'll cross if we get to them. As of now, I'm still planning to spend my fall Saturdays watching Shaun Wade, Justin Fields, Wyatt Davis and company do cruel things to overmatched opponents for 60 minutes.

KEEP 'EM HUMBLE. Urban Meyer may not have been the biggest Xs and Os guy, especially late in his career, but the dude was an absolute motivational master. I took his coaching football class in college, and the guy taught one 30-minute lecture and it had me thinking I was ready to be a corporate CEO.

He knew how to get the best out of his players – on the field and off the field – even if that meant putting his star running back's ass on the bench.



After some brief digging, I've determined that the game was Ohio State's 55-14 win over Illinois in 2014, which I vividly remember was a night game with alternate uniforms, for some reason. I guess you gotta go pull out all the stops for the Illibuck.

Props to Samuel for the breakout performance, but for those of you with short memories, that was far from the most incredible thing that happened that game.

The best part was, it wasn't even a fumble – the runner was ruled down. So this poor fellow lives in gifstory forever after getting hit-sticked by a 250-pound quarterback, and he didn't even get the turnover as a consolation prize.
