We'll not see the likes of Urban Meyer on the sidelines again for some time and I thank him for upholding the tradition of Buckeye football. Just a tremendous coaching mind and we've been fortunate to have his skills for teaching young men, redeveloping the program, and elevating Buckeye football back where it belongs.

I wish Ryan Day the best, hope he keeps Urban's phone number handy, and I'll be curious to see what the future brings.

One thing intrigues me. Day and Haskins are close. I've felt Haskins should do what is best, declare for the draft, and move to the next level. While he'd benefit from another year of college, he's sitting on a mountain of money and opportunity.

With Day in the chair, I'm wondering if Haskins might stay another year. I'd still tell him to go..... but I don't know the extent of the personal relationship, mentorship, etc that he and Day have.

Not attempting to be directly contrarian, but I don't see a single benefit to Dwayne staying another year.

You don't lose Urban Meyer and get better as a team, just like you don't lose Luke Fickell and get better at the LB position at least and, based on all available evidence, on the defense as a whole.

Speaking of defense, the first thing Day has to do is make wholesale changes to the coaching staff on that side of the ball. If he doesn't then yeah, I'll go ahead and predict doom. (And that he'll probably be replaced by Luke Fickell in several years.)

I haven't forgotten the Cooper years. I think it's perfectly reasonable to be concerned. We were lucky that Urban was available when Tressel got fired. That was a sure thing. Day isn't a sure thing. I'm hoping for the best but I'm prepared for less.

If Urban was still here I'd be prepared for his first loss in The Game at Ann Arbor in year five under Harbaugh. That would be okay. He'd have been 7-1 against Michigan and 4-1 against Harbaugh. If Day starts 0-1 then that will be very different. How will he handle the pressure, the spotlight, and the media scrutiny?

There's no one in Ann Arbor, State College, or East Lansing who isn't celebrating today.

You're right. Maybe the football team will enter a mediocre period, and I hope that doesn't happen. For me, it's not the end of the world. The university and overall AD made great strides while Cooper was shitting the bed. We also shouldn't forget that in the 19 years prior to Cooper, Earl and Woody won no national championships and combined for the same number of Rose Bowl wins as Cooper. Did much better against tsun admittedly. My point is that I'm thankful for what Urban did, hope for the best for his health and if he is leaving on bad terms with Drake appreciate the way he's doing it. Hopefully, the football program won't miss a beat, but if it does for a while, it's not the end of the world and the university won't miss a beat regardless of what happens on Ohio Stadium.

No one is saying they will get better. As NF pointed out, it's damned hard to get better than what UFM brought. No one knows one way or the other.

However, the other day you were telling everyone to prepare for dark times. :tibor:

I'm not sure that's what's best for the program or next year's team. Day needs to make this program his, and that's doubly hard when the legend you're following is hanging around. It was awfully hard for Earl, and Woody made a point of staying away. I can't imagine what it would have been like with him involved in any way.
