Would you say the football program was thriving for thirteen years under John Cooper? Was 2-10-1 thriving? No national championships, only three conference titles, and only one Rose Bowl?
Have you paid attention to what happened at Michigan since Lloyd Carr retired? What about the drought at Bama before Saban came and set up a semi-pro operation? How have things gone at USC since Pete Carroll skipped town? Don't think Ohio State can't have another dark period. How much does beating Michigan really mean to a kid from New Hampshire?
I haven't forgotten the Cooper years. I think it's perfectly reasonable to be concerned. We were lucky that Urban was available when Tressel got fired. That was a sure thing. Day isn't a sure thing. I'm hoping for the best but I'm prepared for less.
If Urban was still here I'd be prepared for his first loss in The Game at Ann Arbor in year five under Harbaugh. That would be okay. He'd have been 7-1 against Michigan and 4-1 against Harbaugh. If Day starts 0-1 then that will be very different. How will he handle the pressure, the spotlight, and the media scrutiny?
There's no one in Ann Arbor, State College, or East Lansing who isn't celebrating today.
