Umpire BLOWS Galarraga's Perfect Game

Never been a fan of instant replay in almost every case. BUT, in this case, MLB should reverse this call and make it right. While human error is part of the game lets fix this for this young ballplayer.

Three perfect games in a very short time=no more PED's?

My opinion is that the call should be overturned. This is the only situation where I think you could do that- 2 outs in the 9th inning means that calling Donald out ends the game there. The kid pitched a perfect game, and that should be reflected in MLB history.

All that being said, I absolutely love the class that this is being handled with by everyone. Leyland, Galaraga, and Joyce should all be commended for the class that they have shown in dealing with this situation. Its so rare in this day and age to see players act like Galaraga is, and kudos to Leyland for backing him up on that.

Overturning this call is an extremely slippery slope in my opinion. Where does it end? Suppose the Indians, for some reason, tie the game or win the game? It doesn't change the situation in which the call was made yet now you are changing the outcome of the game.

I don't know. I was sick for the pitcher and I'm an Indians fan.

I am saying good officials should not skew close calls depending on the situation. There may not be any good officials, I don't know. I do know they should always call what they see. No exceptions.

if machines were officiating sporting events, i would agree. i think we have all watched enough sports to know that officials skew their calls all the time. big ten basketball calls going to the home team, players like Kobe and MJ getting calls that second tier players don't, good pitchers getting the generous call on the outside part of the plate, etc etc. IMO this should have been one of those instances.

Then the game still should have ended with Jason Donald out at first and the Tigers still should have won. I realize it doesn't work like that, but it should.

As a youngster, I became a Tigers fan in the '60s in Toledo, because in the days before cable TV, most areas of Toledo could get Detroit TV stations but not the ones from Cleveland. It wasn't based on which team was winning more games.

Are you kidding -- Al Kaline (aka) Salty, Norm Cash, Gates Brown, Bill Freehan, Dick McAulfie, Mickey Lolich, Denny McLain vs Rocky Colavito, Sudden Sam MacDowell and a cast of thousands of incompetents? You never had a choice.

Pine tar! If they can take away a home run for pine tar too far up the bat handle, or award first base on shoe polish they can sure as hell make this call correct. Just put the game in NYC and see how fast the commish makes the call.

Baseball is slowly getting more into replay, just like the other 3 sports. In my eyes (being a tigers fan) its the equivalent to NBA (having a toe on the 3 point line) NFL (RB with ball crossing the pie line). Both USED to be judgement calls. Now have replay. No im not saying replay balls and stirkes, but maybe tags at bases, HR's - foul or short and diving plays in the outfield were the ups are far away and the ball is trapped sometimes. JMO. And for baseball do it like the NHL and NCAA does. Have someone in the booth with the ability to look at the play and make the call. I dont see why its BAD for baseball when 10 years ago, no other sport used it either.

Galarraga has something better than a perfect game, he has the first perfect game blatantly botched by a 1st base umpire on national television. I mean, 20 other people have pitched your run-of-the-mill perfect game before, so Galarraga now enjoys the distinction of having done something nobody else has ever done.

Nothing needs to be changed ... I think the commish will be making a tragic error if he reverses the call and changes the outcome of a game (two wrongs don't make a right, not to mention opening Pandora's Box).

Record books have footnotes and asterisks and such (baseball record books more than other sports' record books), and Galarraga will go down in history already as things stand. I mean, whenever somebody pitches a perfect game, Tim Kirkjian will now say, "That was the xth perfect game in Major League history, or the xth+1 when counting Galarraga's perfect game in the 2010 season." Galarraga will basically be mentioned by name from now until the end of time in connection with perfect games. He just displaced Don Larsen.

Guys like Buerhle, Halladay and Braden will never enjoy such noteriety.

Bud's statement:

"First, on behalf of Major League Baseball, I congratulate Armando Galarraga on a remarkable pitching performance. All of us who love the game appreciate the historic nature of his effort last night.

"The dignity and class of the entire Detroit Tigers organization under such circumstances were truly admirable and embodied good sportsmanship of the highest order. Armando and Detroit manager Jim Leyland are to be commended for their handling of a very difficult situation. I also applaud the courage of umpire Jim Joyce to address this unfortunate situation honestly and directly. Jim's candor illustrates why he has earned the respect of on-field personnel throughout his accomplished career in the Major Leagues since 1989.

Agreed. He joins Harvey Haddix in the "It wasn't really a perfect game, but he HAS to be mentioned when discussing it" category.
