U.S. Women's National Soccer (USWNT)

,,,,,,,,,,,
My favorite from last night was then showing Horan after that foul and the commentator was like “oh they’re teammates” right as the camera was on her saying “fucking bitch” in the most obvious lip reading possible  She got a couple of more shots in too, which made me laugh when Dutch 10 kept whining for a card like she hadn’t done anything.

That said, the second half was much much better after the sub and especially after the foul. Morgan isn’t really a #9 though, she made some nice feeds (and blew a couple of crosses) but she just isn’t that much of a finisher. Won’t matter against 75% of the teams, but I wonder as they get further in the KO stage if scoring goals against physical defenses is going to be a limiting issue.
it seemed to me the biggest problems were that everyone had no idea what the other players were going to do. Thats just chemistry I understand but it might be philosophy as well. If the lines have a solid idea of how each line is going to maneuver it's a better option for some of their passes that went into no mans land last night and the touch passes being on the same page.

The other thing was they are afraid to unleash it unless they have a very clear line for some reason, except for Rose who was a bit too amped on her shots. The Netherlands showed them the way to fire it in from the edge of the box and it was brilliant. Give yourselves a chance to score by getting shots on the goal. Make the keeper work and make mistakes. Though, I may be completely wrong.

Another underwhelming performance, but they advance after taking second in the Group.

A shot by Portugal bounced straight off the post in the 91st minute, a shot that could have turned a scoreless tie into a loss that would have advanced Portugal instead of the USA.

Announcers were bad....

That said, they're not good right now. My very not hot take at the moment is, 4 years ago Megan Rapinoe played out of her fucking mind and then they still needed Rose Lavelle to explode on the scene and bring it home... I just think the most likely player to score a pile of goals for them in this tournament was Mal Swanson (Swenson? Samsonite! I was way off!), Lavelle isn't herself and I'm just gonna say it, Alex Morgan doesn't score against good teams (and yes I know she facilitates but... yeah) So, I mean I think Sophia and Trinity and Alyssa Thompson better catch some lightning in a bottle. We need goals and we need other teams to be scared of the US scoring goals.

I absolutely believe Sweden is going to knock us out. They get to rest players tonight and still win their group while we're losing Rose and already are so erratic that we can't get it together. I would say Rapinoe starts if she can because she seems the only one capable of getting the ball to players going forward. Everyone else wants to Maradona the thing down the field until the last second. The Swedes will find a way to hit paydirt on the counter and it will make things extremely dodgy. I'd love for us to have a youthful revolution and go on a run but it has a terrible feel right now.

Again, I'll set the DVR because I don't expect much. No cohesion or finishing is there. Portugal held possession beyond what I thought was possible. The Mid is very mid. Go with a 4-4-1. Rodman or Williams up front. Sub as possible w/o Rose. That hurts, as much as that card. But go team!

The way we played today I don't think it would have mattered if we used 13.

Saw some of the coach's comments in response to Carli's criticism. He was saying they always play hard on the field. I think back to Michael Jordan talking about the will to prepare to win was more important than the will to win. I have a feeling that was at least part of what Carli was talking about.

My feeling with this group, and it has been since the Olympics is they probably need a little more Wayne Gretzky, and realize they are going to miss 100 percent of the shots they don't take. No shade to the women but these aren't 6'6" keepers and 6'3" center backs. There's a lot of ugly chances to be had if you are consistently hitting the ball on target.
