U.S. Women's National Soccer (USWNT)

Trinity Rodman with an excellent game. Won corners, tracked back to play some excellent defense, was in the middle of a very good run when she was taken down to set up what should have been a dangerous free kick (except for the fact there was no call). Very good performance.
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. Scored the games only goal on a great shot in OT. Not bad. Not bad at all.

I want to add, before it falls apart tomorrow, that Trinity Rodman is kicking all sorts of ass as just a good two way player and doing all the work. She's sorta taken that Tobin Heath role (though stylistically not the same kind of player). Been really impressed with her playing both ways.
As I said.

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that Trinity is predisposed to do the hard unsung work necessary to get the second balls and get back on defense. She also is a pass first player and she actually doesn't need to be.

And her hair is different colors!
Yeah. I know and I really don't want to put the worm thing on her. But she certainly does understand how to do, and is willing to do the hard parts of the job. You'll notice my single in game comment toward a different player who happens to be the captain and its because that player doesn't always model that same behavior. Anywho Trinity and Naomi Girma have been simply amazing (and Mal and Sophia and Rose have all been quite, quite good)

Oh man. She is giving it her all but has had two chances to really put this away.

Great saves on both sides. Naher just saved the US.
I had to sind like the crazies bastard in the planet just yelling, "kick it! kick it! kick it!" Over and over again.

Both men's and women's teams baby the ball too much trying to make it perfect when a quick touch and gone could be the thing that works

Excellent base of players that should learn to dominate teams I think. I hope anyway!

USWNT's Hayes calls Girma 'best defender I've ever seen'

i

The forwards on the United States women's national team have gotten much of the attention during the run to the Olympic gold medal game, but Naomi Girma -- the ever-present force in the heart of the team's defense -- might be the team's most important player.

Without Girma's steady demeanor and always-on-time tackling in the past two knockout games, the Americans almost surely wouldn't have been in position to pull off their pair of dramatic victories.

"Look, she's the best defender I've ever seen," USWNT coach Emma Hayes said after the team's 1-0 semifinal win over Germany on Tuesday. "I've never seen a player as good as her at the back. She's got everything, poise, composure, she can defend, she anticipates, she leads. [She's] unbelievable."

Against Germany, Girma was everywhere: clearing crosses from in front of goal, back-stopping when Crystal Dunn surged forward, starting offensive moves (she began the sequence that led to Sophia Smith's winning goal) and tackling near goal whenever it was necessary.

Girma and the USWNT defense has allowed just two goals over five games at these Olympics, with shutouts in their past two matches.
