U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

You never know.

Remember that delegate from Trinidad (Jack Walker) who wanted like multiple stadiums from Qatar for his vote for World Cup 2022? These bastards are all corrupt (FIFA, UEFA, you name it).

Think about how much kickback money Platini got for making EURO 2022 freaking 13 nations.

And Clint Dempsy should've done snow angels after his goal  (or wrote his name in the snow with...liquid).

Didn't that same guy get hung out to dry & get banned from the sport for life or something along those lines? I remember him trying to throw everyone under the bus when he went down in flames. It's no surprise at all that they're all corrupt when you factor how much money the sport generates worldwide. Only going to get worse unless somebody or some organization has the balls to do something about it, which is looking highly unlikely at this point.

Agree with the Dempsey point. That would've been one of the most legendary celebrations ever had he done it. You don't really get many opportunities to do something like that in a career.

Looks like Costa Rica are going to protest to FIFA about the game not being suspended. Good luck with that one. Where were those protests during the game ?

Didn't the ref ask them if they wanted to continue? I was standing in my living room for the last 20+ minutes of that game. That was fun to watch while looking out the window seeing the same shit they were playing in fall from the sky.

This is the definition of the ultimate "home field advantage" especially when your opponent comes from a country where the record low is 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Re: This climatic phenomenon was supposedly provoked by cold air masses coming from the North Pole which caused lowest temperature of the year in San Jose, with 12.5 grades (54.5 degrees degrees Fahrenheit), when the normal temperature is 18.9 degrees (66.02 degrees degrees Fahrenheit)

That match was nuts. Glad they finished it. Would have been a bid disadvantage to have to finish Saturday or Sunday since both teams play Tuesday. Much needed win, and we pulled through. Kind of bush league that Costa Rica is protesting the game since their players wanted to continue playing when the ref stopped it. They had chances just like the US did.

Beasley played great in the back. He may get beat here and there, but his recovery is great, and saved us a few times the other night.

On another note, can't wait for tickets to go on sale for the Sept 10th US v Mexico match in Cbus. I'm definitely going to that one!

Report: Costa Rica to file protest on snow

Costa Rica plans to file an official protest with FIFA about Friday's 1-0 loss to the United States in a Rocky Mountain snowstorm, according to a Reuters report.

Wait and see. That's the position of the U.S. Soccer Federation after FIFA on Monday confirmed receipt of Costa Rica's protest of Friday's World Cup qualifier played in heavy snow at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Costa Rica is seeking a replay of the match based on alleged violations of competitive regulations and disciplinary sanctions against the Salvadoran match officials.

"The U.S. Soccer Federation has been informed by FIFA that there has been correspondence between the Costa Rican federation and FIFA regarding the World Cup qualifier on March 22," U.S. Soccer spokesman Michael Kammarman said at Monday's press conference ahead of Tuesday night's World Cup qualifier against Mexico. "And we're awaiting a response from FIFA."

According to the Costa Rican federation's official site, the federation's legal department worked around the clock on Saturday to submit the protest in the 24-hour window that FIFA rules establish.

The site also details the four chief arguments made in the protest: 1) the danger posed to the players by allowing the match to be played; 2) persons entering the field while the ball was in play; 3) the disappearance of the lines on the field due to the snow accumulation; and 4) the impact of the snow on the movement of the ball on the field.

It remains to be seen how far the Costa Rican protest goes. FIFA is still working on determining whether the Central Americans followed procedure in filing it, according to the 2014 World Cup regulations. One detail in those regulations calls for the team captain of the protesting team to "immediately lodge a protest with the referee in the presence of the captain of the opposing team."

But Clint Dempsey, who captained the US on Friday, denies that meeting ever took place.

I roam around the football and basketball boards here on BuckeyePlanet. Big US soccer fan and glad I just found this thread.

This is a MUST win for Mexico tonight. Even a draw would be a disaster for El Tri. Only earning 1 or 2 points total in two home games, both at Azteca, would be insane.

I think if the US can hold off the charge of an extremely motivated Mexican squad in the first half, the stadium could turn ugly towards the home team. All the pressure is on Mexico - this is a golden opportunity for the US to really play free and attacking soccer, and to take some chances in the attacking third. No Jermaine Jones is a blessing in disguise (or is it really even disguised at this point?!?). Hopefully Bradley and whomever he's paired with in the central midfield can combine well and hopefully control the pace of play. That's asking a lot, but we've seen flashes of it before on the big stages.

Costa Rica's protest was denied by FIFA.

Result stands, and it should. CR's players and coaches wanted to play just as much as the US, when the ref stopped the match.

Big W for the Red, White, and Blue

Sitting on four points through the first three games after the disastrous first game couldn't be really asking for much more. Have a tough test @ Jamaica in June, but after that we get Panama & Honduras at home during the next week and change after that game. We should be sitting in great position after the June qualifiers heading down the stretch into the final four games in September & October. It's still really up in the air as to who will qualify, but I'm nowhere near as worried as I was after the Honduras game. I think this will be a great test for the team heading into next year. If anything, we should all be grateful that CONCACAF is at least somewhat competitive now, even if it does make us feel uneasy at times. The only way for us to get better is to be pushed hard by our opponents & teams in our region getting better can only help us improve more down the road.

USA soccer team signs unique memento from snowy game

usasoccer.png

The United States men's national team played in an epic, snowy battle against Costa Rica on Friday night in a World Cup Qualifier that will go down in USA soccer history because of the incredible storm that the game was played through. There was some controversy over whether or not the game should be finished because of the conditions, but it was decided that the game should be played on. After the game, the USA soccer team took to their official Instagram account to share a brilliant picture. The account sent out a picture of a little tribute the team decided to do to commemorate the game in Denver. The team came together and signed one of the shovels that was used to clear off the lines during the game. FanSided.com has the photo.
