U.S. Men's National Soccer (Official Thread)

USA was missing Dempsey and others and Mexico was missing Giovanni Dos Santos and others. The stadium was half-empty.

So outside of the crowd, the missing players were a wash.

The next game in Mexico City just got more interesting and the Mexico qualifier at Crew Stadium is as interesting as ever.

In an ironic twist, the goalscorer (Michael Orozco Fiscal) was the same guy that got sent off in the 3rd minute (Blatant elbow to the chest) of the final group stage game against Nigeria at the '08 Olympics. I vividly remember wanting that guys head on a spike after that display of stupidity, but I guess I can forgive him......

I'm still a little disappointed. Obviously it's great we just won, especially after they boo the National Anthem, but they looked pretty awful.

At what point will they actually be able to posses the ball? Just a few short years ago I was getting my hopes up that they were getting closer, but they stink. Really bad.

It's great we just pulled an App State over Michigan though.

Not that monumental of an upset, IMO.

Distinctly remember that game.

Thought he'd never put on a Nats jersey again (and many many US fans were hoping that would be so). Redemption, I suppose.

Still need to beat El Tri at Azteca in a WCQ. Impatiently awaiting that day. Bring it! :banger:

I agree up to a point - that point being that I'm less concerned about team play right now and more concerned (especially in friendlies) with uncovering players that show promise, players that you might want to be in the team in 2014. From that standpoint, I think last night was a success. Cameron was excellent, definitely want to see more from him. Shea has been re-discovered. Fabian Johnson looked decent coming back from injury, and showed that he can be useful on the right side in a pinch. As long as a couple players emerge and show something useful in every game, it's progress. The key after that (especially after they reach the Hexagonal) will be putting those players together and getting good team play out of the emerging useful parts.

To me, the most disappointing thing I saw was Landon Donovan. They said he came out because of a hamstring injury. I suspect though that he's also starting to show that what he said a few months ago might have been true - that he's starting to not care as much anymore. I think the fact that he wasn't in the captain's armband was telling. Howard was well-deserving of it in his own right, but in Bocanegra's absence, the Landon Donovan that we've been accustomed to seeing would have had it if he had wanted it. To be fair to him, the US has leaned on him for a long long time and I wouldn't begrudge him if he had finally grown exhausted of it. I just worry about his place in the team if that's true. It would probably take a combination of players to replace what he does for them, and I'm not sure the US has all of those players right now.
