Defense still wins Championships
Tyson Gay is one of the premier US sprinters, if not the best. Tyson ran 9.77 100m on Saturday at the Olympic trials, which is one of the fastest times ever recorded (9.72 is the world record). He ran a 9.68 in the finals on Sunday, the fastest 100m time EVER recorded. It will not count as a world record because of the tailwinds.

To tie this in w/ OSU sports..... yes, he has SEC speed (Arkansas Razorbacks), but he ran the race with a throwback jersey, paying respect to Jessie Owens.

I watched that race... I was completely shocked to see that time. It should be an amazing race between him, Usain Bolt from Jamaica (set the world record a month ago), and Asafa Powell from Jamaica (previously held the world record).

For those of you who (like myself) are in desparate need of some comic relief this morning, I give you this...

It's old, so maybe some of you have seen it or posted it in a different thread.

Christian Site's Ban on 'G' Word Sends Homosexual to Olympics

The American Family Association obviously didn't foresee the problems that might arise with its strict policy to always replace the word "gay" with "homosexual" on the Web site of its Christian news outlet, OneNewsNow. The group's automated system for changing the forbidden word wound up publishing a story about a world-class sprinter named "Tyson Homosexual" who qualified this week for the Beijing Olympics.

cont'd...
...
Tyson Homosexual was a blur in blue, sprinting 100 meters faster than anyone ever has.
His time of 9.68 seconds at the U.S. Olympic trials Sunday doesn't count as a world record, because it was run with the help of a too-strong tailwind. Here's what does matter: Homosexual qualified for his first Summer Games team and served notice he's certainly someone to watch in Beijing.
"It means a lot to me," the 25-year-old Homosexual said. "I'm glad my body could do it, because now I know I have it in me."

Did that announcer say he was running into a slight headwind:huh: No wonder his three competitors were so far back. I don't watch world track that much but is there any real competition for him out there.

Never mind. Did not see the posts above this one. Cannot believe I forgot about Bolt.
Holy shit.

Would love to get bkochmc's view on straight vs. traditional 200m races... running the straight track looks miserable to me.
I'd tend to agree, especially when someone is used to running on an oval. I don't know which one would be tougher though... sprinters have to battle some small degree of centripetal force (depending on what lane the runner is in) while I'd imagine it would be tough to pace the straight 200 (yes, there is a certain amount of pacing in the 200) since it is rarely run and would be tough to gauge where you are in the race. But considering Gay's best normal 200m is 19.58, I'd have to say that is a slightly tougher race.

Impressive - his time between 50 and 150 in that race was about 1 full second faster than the 100m record.
I did a quick analysis of Gay's straight 200m vs. Bolt's world record 19.19 ran last August because I was curious about the time interval comparison:

Interval.... Gay.... Bolt (100m splits)
=============================
0-50........ ????... 5.60
50-100...... ????... 4.32 (Gay 9.88, Bolt 9.92)
100-150..... 4.53... 4.52
150-200..... 5.00... 4.75 (Gay 9.53, Bolt 9.27)
0-200...... 19.41.. 19.19

I cannot find a 0-50m split for Gay but there is only a .04 difference between Bolt and Gay at the 100m mark with Gay slightly ahead. The two would be virtually tied at the 150m mark but Bolt was able to stay closer to his top speed during the last 50m of his race. Could Gay's dropoff be because of the type of race it was? Maybe, but I'd imagine most sprinters would have similar split ratios to Gay than that of Bolt. My guess is if you put Bolt in a race like that he could come close to breaking the 19 second barrier... assuming favorable conditions.
