I love this sight and the moderators/administrators (except like everyone else JCOSU), but I have a question about the twitter policy. I don't particularly love the format, but I do have an account. Most of the people I follow are media people and I don't follow players, but why can't we post player tweets?

I can understand the distaste for the medium. But the mainstream guys have accepted as news why can't BuckeyePlanet post and discuss player tweets?

There are too many headaches with twitter. Folks often don't think through their comments or use as much restraint, and then the reactions from fans can snowball. In general it is just a problematic medium especially since kids like to mess around (particularly with people hounding them about various things, like recruiting or pro declarations)

We don't ban media tweets because they are still paid professionals that consequences or termination for reckless tweets.

The problems stemming from Twitter don't really change because Brian Hartline now gets paid to play football.


In this case, a number of players are using Twitter to deride Ray Small for his damaging comments. There is certainly a good rationale behind their callouts, but you can see how it can get out of hand, especially since similar complaints can be made by you or a random player about Chris Spielman that aren't as justified.

I understand all that. I even agree to a degree, but BP is pretty much the only place not discussing the players' tweets. I think that's interesting. After Rashard Mendenhall's tweets last month I think we can agree that we can actually learn from their mistakes. Did Rashard make a mistake? Yes. Did he clarify what he meant later? Yes. Was his intent that bad no? I actually think I agreed with his main point about celebrating someone's death. Maybe we don't need to bring every tweet here, but some of this information seems pertinent. It just seems odd that we're the only place ignoring it.

I hope you know this is meant in the friendliest way possible, that I only meant this thread for discussion, and that I do respect your decisions.

Yeah, no offense taken, and it is a hot topic with as big as the twitter medium is.

I think the Rashard tweet is a good example of why we don't allow tweets. Maybe he would sounded tin-foil crazy if there was a postgame interview that night, but I think he would have chosen his words better. Knowing the NFL fines he could face, I don't think he would say the towers were demo'd, but he probably would have made his very good point about our celebration of death.

The twitter medium is also all about making a splash. "Ray needs to think things through" wouldn't get retweeted like calling him out on his untrustworthy past at OSU.

It's also an antagonistic medium, folks tend to toss barbs back and forth or call out people quite a bit.

I will agree to all of those points. But the fact is they are being discussed elsewhere. Tweets not being on BP doesn't keep them from being seen. It just sends discussion elsewhere. Tweets being discussed on BP ensures that the most level-headed Buckeye and college football fans are allowed to give their take.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying reading the Ray response tweets elsewhere, we just have to keep things clean here.

We're always evaluating ourselves too, so if Twitter matures into a medium that we should allow, we will do that. Or if say $5k found its way into our back pockets.
