TV Shows You Wish Would Come Back

NFBuck

Total Coverage.
  • Pick 2 shows that you feel were cut down in their prime...

    I'd take...
    1. Arrested Development(2003-2006, Fox)- The funniest show ever aired in my opinion (a notch above Seinfeld), shame that Fox just wouldn't get behind it. The DVD's are a blessing. Every time you watch an episode you notice another subtle joke. Tobias Funke(David Cross) may be the funniest character ever on television IMO.
    2. Dave Attell's Insomniac(2002-2003, Comedy Central)- I loved watching this show on Sunday nights. It was just Attell travelling from city to city, getting wasted and going on random adventures, meeting random people. Brilliant in its simplicity.

I wholeheartedly agree with both of your picks. With the exception of The Simpsons, I don't think there has been a comedy that was better written than Arrested Development in the last 25 years. I still watch this in reruns and find myself laughing out loud over and over (only a total moron wouldn't find the name Bob Loblaw to be hilarious).

Dave Attell is one of my favorite comedias and his show was the only reality show besides Cops that was worth being on the air. Unfortunately, it was the fans of the show that killed it (according to Attell), b/c once it became popular they ruined the spontaneous format. Whenever Attell would show up in a bar fans would try to be as outrageous as possible just to get on camera.

If you are talking about shows coming back pretty much as they were, great choices.

Sports Night- Not a fan of Aaron Sorkins politics, but this was one of the best written shows on television. The acting wasn't bad either.

The Muppet Show- Problem wasn't popularity or guests, it was just so time consuming for the Hensons. (note that this would assume that Jim Henson were still alive and working on it)

Wiseguy- Now that writers are getting better at writing the serialized drama (Heroes, Lost, the Shield, etc...) this show would do very well.

Bob Loblaw: "I think I'm just going to stay in tonight and work on my law blog".
Tobias: "Ah yes. The 'Bob Loblaw Law Blog'. You sir, are a mouthful."

...and still one of my favorite subtle comedy moments is the newspaper headline: "Bob Loblaw Lobs Law Bomb."

My g/f is obsessed with Arrested Development and hipped me to it a while ago. I too would love to see it come back but I honestly just don't think there are enough people who have the type of bizarre (or some would say sharp) sense of humor that it takes to enjoy it. Let's face it, it's not South Park or the Family Guy which could easily amuse the 8 year olds of our society. :) Regardless, I loved it. Fave part...Job's Aztecan Tomb...hilarious $18,000 investment.

Cheaters, well that's just a gold mine. Not sure if they cancelled it or not, but it seems that all they do is run old episodes. Probably one of the funniest shows ever.

I also liked an old cop show called NY Undercover.

That's what was so great about that show. Every character was funny. There was not one character on that show that was lame or boring. Hell, it even made Liza F'n Minelli funny!

the writing was much too intelligent for the average American

I agree with this wholly and am beginning to hate the fact that the dumber and more simple-minded a show is, the higher ratings it gets. That's life though. Still, it makes you wonder how many great programs might exist if we valued shows like Ed or Arrested Development a bit more.

Agreed, and they give such little chance for shows anymore. If it doesn't pull rating right away then it gets cancelled.
