"Zero clue which it is"
In addition to the crystal ball prediction hype for anyone that glances sideways at Michigan on the way past, one of the more glaring indicators of just how awful their insider coverage continues to be is the complete lack of awareness around what their recruiting board looks like.
The most glaring example right now is OL recruiting, unless I'm missing it somewhere, no one seems to have any clue who their top targets are.
In contrast, who around here can name Ohio State’s top two targets at OL (Dewberry, Greene), S (Branch, Nwankpa), and the dynamics around DL recruiting (basically playing musical chairs with Bama/Oklahoma with guys like Abor and Jackson while prioritizing McClellan, Kanu, and Curry).
Their insiders suck, but it’s likely the case that their coaches and overall strategy also suck, which makes it harder to determine what the plan is in the first place even for competent coverage, which is also funny.
I would fully expect that bagman excuse, but it is far more likely NIL. Think about it... old timers like me remember scUM as a force in the B1G and a national player. The last two decades they've been neither. For the kids being recruited now, scUM just is another also ran program. Which is to say, if I'm a D-I caliber CB with a bunch of instagram followers... what "brand" am I going to ant to go associate with, the one I've never heard of or the one that's in contention for the CFP every year?
This is more of a general thought on NIL that was inspired by your comment rather than a specific response to it, but while the players themselves can benefit from NIL, I still feel things like $200k donations to fake churches can have a pretty big influence on family members and the ultimate outcome of a recruitment.
It’s mockable that Michigan thinks they’re playing in that realm with their sub-#500 tier three-star priorities, but I do believe the playing field isn’t entirely leveled by NIL at the elite level due to those type of family benefits which as far as I know are still not covered by what is legal now.
