Michigan coach Juwan Howard undergoes heart procedure
Michigan coach Juwan Howard underwent a successful heart procedure Friday, the school announced.Howard had a scheduled operation to resect an aortic aneurysm and repair an aortic valve, conditions identified during a routine medical check earlier this offseason.
Dr. Himanshu Patel, who performed the operation, said Howard is expected to fully recover in six to 12 weeks and could return to the program in four to six weeks.
"I feel so grateful and blessed that this surgery was performed at University of Michigan Health," Howard said in a statement. "My wife, Jenine, and our family appreciate the world-class care that has been provided to us. Dr. [Kim] Eagle, Dr. Patel, Dr. [Stanley] Chetcuti, and all of the staff at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center are so talented and performed like champions throughout this process. I am going to work very hard in my rehabilitation to be stronger than ever by the time our upcoming season is upon us."
Just sayin':
1) I had a similar operation back in Nov 2021. I had the "Bentall Procedure" (my aortic valve was replaced with one made from cow tissue and the aneurysm section of the aorta was replaced with a dacron tube) and it definitely wasn't any fun. I sure wish him a speedy recovery.
2) FWIW, mine was identified basically the same way. My family doctor detected a heart murmur* during my annual "wellness" office visit and she referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist did some further testing and referred me to a cardiothoracic surgeon. He did a lot more tests and recommended surgery. I didn't have any symptoms and didn't feel bad; so I was hesitant about having the surgery. However, my wife wanted me to have it, so I went ahead with it. The point being: Needless to say, you can have a serious health issue and not even know it. It is always a good idea to get an annual physical and/or "wellness checkup".
* A heart murmur is a whooshing, humming or rasping sound between the heartbeat sounds. This is caused by noisy blood flow within the heart. Blood can flow abnormally through the heart for many reasons, including defective valves, congenital heart disorders and anaemia.
