ttun basketball (Juwan out, Dusty May in)

They spent 12 years with a very admittedly great culture. Winning with a mix of low, mid and upper tier guys.

Now they have guys hammering how they need to change the culture. And they want the McDonald’s All Americans.

I’d love to see them go with the big name splash hire with no experience that they think instantly brings top 5 classes, because Michigan. Nevermind if the guy strikes out and has to coach anything less. Freaking clueless.

And I love it.

Yeah, I heard some talk on 97.1 this afternoon, some kind of national show, where they aired a clip of someone complaining that Beilein didn't sign a single McDonald's AA in all his time at UM. I think it might have been Jalen Rose with this criticism, as clearly it was short-sighted and silly. A lot of programs that got multiple McDonald's AAs in that 12-year span didn't make multiple F4s. I don't see the lack of McDonald's AAs as having held their program back really. I think some are saying this because of the idea that recruiting could be better with Juwan Howard, manufacturing a reason for fans to prefer him to be hired and building momentum to get him the job. It could just as easily be worse, as clearly Beilein, much like Bo Ryan, had a keen eye for talent that could help his teams compete at a high level. Recruiting stars is just half the battle.

They're idiots. A lot of us knocked Beilein early on as a "system guy" and the results he got were decidedly mediocre his first 5-6 years. But, turns out he was smart enough to adapt, and had a knack for hiring really good assistants (not unlike Matta during the first half of his time in C-bus). They did an extraordinary job developing lower and middle-tier recruits and even mixed in the occasional blue chipper. Beilein over the last 6-ish years was a terrific coach. He won't be easy to replace, and i think they're in for a rude awakening if they hire Howard. He might get an initial bump recruiting wise, but the track record for success amongst former NBA players trying to coach in college is absolutely dreadful.
