TSUN 28, Michigan St. 24 (final)

As a transplanted Buckeye, I have come to appreciate the UM-MSU rivalry over the years. Two large Big 10 universities located only an hour apart means that there is a lot of 'inbreeding' in the sense that families very often have split loyalties. Both have great college football traditions, even though UM has the dominant program.

Best bumper sticker I saw to describe the rivalry:

Michigan State University: THE University of Michigan

I'll explain a little bit....UM/MSU is a different in-state rivalry than most (such as Auburn/Alabama) because it's so one-sided, and Spartan fans HATE us for it. More so, I think, than UM/OSU because we live and work side-by-side, and UM/OSU isn't historically one-sided, so there's more respect. Someone mentioned once on here that there's a unique breed of Michigan fan found only in Ohio, that roots for Michigan mainly in order to spite OSU. Well, those people live in Michigan too, only they're Michigan State fans. They root for State to spite Michigan. They actually will tell you that the App State loss was the best thing that ever happened to them as a Spartan fan. Those people are what make it fun to beat MSU. They're the roughly 1/3 of MSU fans that probably went to Western or Ferris State, and when Bo died last year, expressed the opinion that he could rot in hell.

That and I've got plenty of friends that are Spartan fans, and I get blissful silence until basketball season :)

extremely well-put HTM...

i've lived about a total of 15 years in the two states and have family members in each of the three camps (and some in the in-spite of camp) and i can say that's the best / most cogent explanation of the differences between those two rivalries i've ever heard.

your comments should be boilerplated someplace.

now i live in PA and i'm just confused how to respond to the banalities belched by these state penn sycophants!

Maybe a little longer. It isn't like you lost to one of my schools, Grand Valley in roundball. They don't call them the Lakers for nothing. I think Sparty thought they were playing Kobe and the LA Lakers...

Like I said. Different players, different coach, same Spartans. Gotta love 'em.

Henne, by the way, did a FANTASTIC job under pressure in the 4th quarter. It's not that MSU didn't get any more pressure on him, it's just that he stood in there and got rid of the ball quicker than before. He threw that TD to Mathews despite the fact there were two Spartans with bad intentions about eight inches away. Good play-calling by the coaches to get the WRs open on that first drive so that Henne could throw it right away.

This game had echoes of the 2004 game in it.

So neither UM nor OSU has clinched a share of the Big Ten, but you guys ought to be happy anyway - this guaranteed that the game in two weeks is for all the marbles. As it should be, of course.

There you are!

I have been looking for you all day!

Did you see Virginia's win over Wake on the missed FG at the end?

I have been trying to find you.

I rooted like hell for MSU to win, but seeing MSU power into the michigan defense sure made me feel good about our chances.... The way MSU attacked in the 2nd half is almost exactly what we did against Wisconsin. Both teams said ENOUGH OF THIS and just went right at them. The difference to me is that OSU's line is better, and we have the more talented individual in the backfield too (although not as good of a 1/2 punch as MSU). Our defense also really destroyed the MSU offense too though...

As long as we keep manningham infront of us and lay the run tight we should be ok...

yeah Henne must wish he had 1 more year because he's been missing open recievers down field for a long time now... He had Manningham deep with his man beat several times and couldn't connect

Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Beating Michigan State is always worth bragging rights. That's why it's called a rivalry. Ohio State doesn't have an in-state rival, more's the pity, because college football is more fun when you do. Who do you talk smack to otherwise? Me?

As a Cavs fan,

what rivalries do YOU look to?

I've never seen Chad overthrow Mario so much. Missed him in the Illinois game, a couple of other times before today too. Ridiculous.

Shawn Crable is a beast for catching Ringer on that one play.

you got that right sniper... I couldn't believe someone caught Ringer on that one! Good win against MSU though to say the least, but I think it gets much tougher for the Weenies next week!

I'm torn on wether to root against or for U-M next week against Wisconsin?

I mean I hate wisconsin, but if Michigan loses the worst we can do at that point is tie for the title and since we're the higher ranking team we would still go into the BCS without a doubt. For sure if we lose I think the Rose Bowl would pick us up ASAP.
