  • This weeks Sporting News has an article ranking college footballs top coaches nationally and by conference. JT came in 6th nationally. Conference-wise coaches are rated on a scale of 1-5. In the Big 10, both JT and Ferentz were given fives, LLLoyd was given a four along with Alverez and Tiller, and poor old JoePa has slipped to a 3.... Here's the national top 10:
    1. Pete Carroll (Big Surprise)
    2. Steve Spurrier (???)
    3. Bob Stoops
    4. Kirk Ferentz
    5. Frank Beamer
    6. Jim Tressel
    7. Phil Fulmer
    8. Mack Brown
    9. Dan Hawkins (Boise St.)
    10. Tom O'Brien (Boston College)

I agree with this mostly...though I don't think Boise St really should be mentioned in the same breath as the other programs on the list...Spurrier had some pretty impressive success at Florida...if he can duplicate it it'll show he deserves the ranking, if he can't he probably won't be on the list in a couple years...but it is tough to argue with him being on the list

Frank Beamer is one of the best coaches out there for my money, I'm glad he got some respect

IMO, Ferentzs is way to high without a BCS win and/or a National Title. I also like where Llyod Carr is on the list :wink2:

Stoops is totally undeserving of that lofty ranking with the way his teams have finished the last two seasons... Spurrior is a good coach, who had exactly ZERO undefeated seasons while in Gainesville... i am skeptical as to whether or not he'll take the Cocks to the elite level, so he's ranked too high as well... my take?

    1) Petey
    2) Kirk Ferentz
    3) Jim Tressel
    4) Frank Beamer
    5) Boob Stoops
    6) Jeff Tedford
    7) Darth Visor
    8) Fat Phil
    9) Bobby Petrino
    10) Mack Cooper-- er, i mean Brown

for Ferentz to take a moribund Iowa Program, in which he went 1-11 his first season, to three consecutive 10 win seasons, and 3 straight top 8 finishes, which are unprecedented in Iowa Football history, without the stellar recruiting classes of the LSU's, Texas's, OU's, Ohio State's, and USC's of the world, is an amazing accomplishment... i was half tempted to put him in first place...

I was a bit surprised that Urban Meyer was left off the list with all the praise he's gotten the past couple years. I mean if Hawkins is getting the love, why not Meyer? I guess we'll see how he does in the SEC. I also agree that Tedford and Petrino have an argument to be in there.

    WTF... Steve Superior????

The redskins sucked under him, and he hasn't coached college in years....

Ferrentz although a good coach is getting his freaking cock blown by the media for not having done much in the bowls.

and yes, to whomever said it, I love where Llloyd ranks!

He has taken Iowa from the gutter to being in 4 straight bowls, and I believe they won 3 of them, with the one loss being to USC a couple of years ago...which is certainly nothing to be ashamed of

And I believe Iowa has won/shared 2 Big 10 titles, but I might be a bit off on that

Ferentz is definately deserving of his ranking. Spurrier on the otherhand? Give me a break. He had success at Florida, leaves for and ultimately tanks in the NFL, then comes back and is given a #2 ranking? Whatever. If he can turn a mediocre South Carolina program and make them competitive, then I'll give him some Kudos. But to me at this point he's not even in my top 10 which would be...
    1. Ferentz
    2. Carroll
    3. JT
    4. Beamer
    5. Stoops
    6. Phat Phil
    7. Hawkins
    8. Petrino
    9.Mack Brown
    10. Urban Meyer

    Just my OPINION:

I never said he wasnt deserving of a Top 10 rank, just not #4. Remember we are talking about the TOP 10 coaches, not 119. Being in the top 10 of the nation is deserving enough for any coach. I just think with him not having a national title, no BCS wins, only 2-4 against (rival) Iowa St., as well as sporting the likes of failing to make a bowl twice. If we add the missed bowls as Losses, he would be 3-3 in the bowls as well as spouting aseason record of 1-10. Has Kirk Ferentz though changed the program around? Yes, without a doubt he took it from an Iowa program of losing 5/6 games a season to 2 Big Ten titles in 6 years as well as three 10 win seasons consecutively. Iowa was never the worst program in America and wasnt exactly bottom of the barrel when Ferentz took over. IMO, Iowa was stuck behind powerhouses of Michigan and OSU and had to find a way to hang with the big dogs every year - not just once or twice every so often. Heck, Hayden Fry took over an Iowa program and had a .61 winning percentage (from previous Head Coach Bob Comming who was .33%). Kirk Ferentz is at .57% winning at Iowa currently. Can Kirk Ferentz become an Iowa hero and legend? Yes. Is he qualified right now to be one of Iowas top coaches ever? Yes. Is he qualified to be one of the top 5 in the nation? Not just yet - we will have to wait and see if he can keep it up, because we have all seen programs come and go.

    1) Pete Carroll
    2) Stoops
    3) Bobby Bowden
    4) Jim Tressel
    5) Frank Beamer
    6) Kirk Ferentz
    7) Larry Coker
    8) Phil Fulmer
    9) Mack Brown
    10) Urban Meyer (gotta give a mid-major coach some love)

This is tough. Looking at great coaches, you've got guys who take over elite programs and win chamionships, guys who take over weak programs and bring them to respectibility, and everything in between. Those different situations are hard to compare. Two guys from Kansas who at least deserve some consideration - Bill Snyder for taking a middling program to semi-power status, and Mark Mangino for taking a sorry program to the cusp of respectibility.

I guess I don't really have a problem either with where Ferentz is ranked. As a previous poster mentioned what he has done their is truly amazing considering where he started. Maybe he and Coach Tressel could swap spots since we have won the National Title, but Ferentz also went undefeated in the Big 10 in 2002 and was co-champions last year. Tough call. Coach T. doesn't take a backseat to anybody, thats for sure, but Ferentz is definitely up there.

College coaches buddy, NFL coaching career don't mean a thing :)

just messing...i don't think Spurrier really deserves to be on this list, if not he sure as hell doesn't deserve #2...I think we can all agree with that

Pride: i hope you didn't take my comments personally, because they weren't...

as for 'not exactly bottom of the barrel,' seriously, you can't do much worse than 1-10... Iowa flat out SUCKED BALLS when he took over... he has taken a terrible team to a higher stratus than at any time in it's long history without the blue chip talent of the perrenial powers... i think he's a fucking amazing coach, but i guess that's JMHO...

the thing that i find most amusing is that you included Larry Coker in your top ten... if you are telling me that Coker would do a similar job in Iowa City than he's doing in Coral Gables, then i don't even know how to respond... Miami consistently has top 5 talent, and all Coker has done is lose one more game each year than he did the year before... 12-0, 12-1, 11-2, 9-3... there's no way that he would replicate 3 straight top 8 finishes in Iowa if he can barely even do that in Miami... all Coker needs to do is not fuck things up, and the Canes will finish in the top 10 each year on talent alone... you simply cannot say the same for the Hawkeyes...
