Fly fishing for crappies and blue gill is fun too. Just an excuse to try to put the fly where you want it to go until you can get to the Snake or Selway. Something about fly fishing for trout or steelhead that can't be beat - the location you're in while you're doing it.

I grew up fly fishing for gills and crappie...it is great fun especially when you get into an area where they are spawning...you can't get the popper back in fast enough...

Great time on the river today. Floated the South Holston for about four hours. Overcast day with temperatures in the low to mid 60s. I didn't break out the fly rod, but stuck with a baitcaster and Lucky Craft pointer in the rainbow trout pattern. I also briefly used a Lucky Craft real skin ghost pointer. Hauled in 18 Brown and Brook trout. No monsters but most were between 15 and 20 inches. The two other guys with me brought in 11 and 8 respectively. One of the other guys brought in the largest fish of the day at 23 inches. All in all a great day. We didn't catch a single Rainbow today which was kind of surprising though.

Here are a few photos:

Very nice trout.

How do the Lucky Craft jerkbaits compare to the Rapalas? I've got HJ10s in every color they make, but there's always room for a few more. One thing I do when fishing jerkbaits is to have two rods rigged-one with 8lb, one with 10. The 8 goes about a foot and a half deeper than the 10, which can make a world of difference. Oh, and I use Silver Thread copolymer which handles like a dream.

I'm a "solid" three weeks away from ice out, so I'll just live vicariously through this thread. Great work.

IMO there is no comparison. The action of the Lucky Craft pointers is incredible. I have several Rapalas and Daiwa/Team Daiwa lures and none of them stack up to the Lucky Crafts. They are a bit pricey, around $20 each, but ocassionally you can find a deal and they are well worth it. I typicall only use mine when I am floating a river so that if it gets caught in under water structure I can motor the boat up to the snag and free it.

I got a Lucky Craft Sammy as a promo for my BASS lifetime membership a few years back. I have a hard time justifying the $20 for a new one, so I just wait until I compile enough Cabelas points and then splurge. When I'm throwing it, I make sure to retie often, which I should do anyway. When I'm fishing lakes that have pike, I go to a 5/0 rigged Super Fluke on braid, I'd hate to lose $20 to one of those toothy assholes.

It is definitely hard to justify the $20 per pop. I would have never spent that kind of money until a friend let me borrow one of his Lucky Crafts on a fishing trip. Unfortunately, I am hooked on these things now and rarely fish any other jerkbait.

I have to throw in my trout story. About 5 years ago, my now 15 year old son, had a friend sleep over. They talked me into taking them fishing the next morning. The friend (Jacob) had never been fishing before.

I said OK, but Jacob's mom wants him home at noon. The next morning I got up early and got together some red worms. The kids fooled around long enough that we really had no time.

I told them we had to do it another time, but that didn't fly. We drove to a close by 60 acre lake that I know we can always catch pan fish. We parked close to the boat launch and started fishing. I told them we had a half hour.

It was late fall, and I'm guessing the lake had been stocked with trout the day before. The fish must have still been hanging around where they were dropped off. This is not a catch and release situation, the fish will perish due to heat by May/June if not caught.

I baited a hook, and showed Jacob how to cast a spinning reel. Before I could bait my son's hook, Jacob is reeling in a fish. When I first saw the fish in the water, I thought to myself, that is a pretty good size Bass. As the fish got closer I saw flashes of silver, it turned out to be a trout.

I hate to admit it, but I was a bit jealous. The kid had been fishing for 30 seconds, and he caught a 14 inch trout. We caught the limit of 3 trout per person, within 20 minutes. I had Jacob back home 15 minutes early. I doubt the kid has been fishing since, but he had a great one time of it.

Wow, what a great experience for a 10ish year old kid. Glad you were able to provide an opportunity to your kid and his friends. Generally speaking, IMO, kids don't spend nearly enough time enjoying the outdoors anymore. Granted, where a family lives typically dictates the opportunities one may have to enjoy the outdoors. Living at the foot of the Smokie Mountains, I have far, far too many hobbies (fishing, mountainbiking, golfing, rock climbing), all of which get me outdoors. Heck, most of my favorite childhood memories (living in Ohio) involve outdoor activities, not sitting on my ass watching television or playing video games.
