It's amazing how ignorant some people are. I'm watching the Houston news here and they are showing people in Galveston walking along the sea wall with police shewing them away. People are casually going about their day in Galveston.

I remember reading something about the powers that be declining to issue evac notices for Galveston. If the "powers that be" think it's safe, who are the common citizens to think different? :wink2:

Scratch the above: this morning the mayor ordered evacuation. Ok, if people are still wandering the seawall now, yea, idiots. Darwin awards, go go!

Coast Guard aborts rescue mission of stranded freighter | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

The U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army aborted a rescue mission Friday to save the 22 crew members on a Cypriot freighter loaded with petroleum coke that was floating helplessly 90 miles southeast of Galveston as Hurricane Ike approached.

New Orleans based Petty Officer Jaclyn Young said Friday afternoon that the five helicopters and planes sent could not safely rescue the passengers.

"We will talk to them hourly and they have electricity and no injuries. They have an emergency beacon to put on if they get in distress,'' she said. But the Coast Guard will not be able to approach until the storm passes, she said.

Chief Michael O'Berry said two medium range recovery helicopters, and tree other planes went on the mission in high, agitated seas.

He said they spent time figuring how they could most safely get to the drifting freighter and keep the pilots, swimmers and rescuers as safe as possible.

"We don't want to put our people in undue harm. But it's inherently dangerous,'' he said.

Petty Officer Thomas Blue, a Coast Guard spokesman, said the 580-foot Antalina is drifting southwest.

"Everybody on board is shaken but OK," he said. Blue said the New Orleans office of the Coast Guard is in constant radio contact with the freighter crew.

He said at about 4 a.m. a distress call was received because "they were unable to steer or make way, they'd lost all propulsion"

He said if they drift to shallow enough water it is possible the freighter could drop anchor to ride out the hurricane.

After 3 days of waiting, Ike finally formed a solid eye wall... which means expect winds to increase to 110 to 115 by the next advisory.

I honestly think the damage in downtown Houston is going to be unbelievable. Imagine winds close too 100 being funneled through a small wind tunnel. Any debris will be a deadly missile

Been blowing TS winds since last night. That bastard is flooding all of south Louisiana, and the poor folks who got Rita are going to get it bad. Chauvin and Terrebonne are hammered, and Nutriaitch is likely getting water too. Laffite is getting swamped, as is all of lower Plaquemine and Jefferson really.

Guys and gals, this is going to cost a friggin boat load of money. Insurance losses are going to be huge.

Hold on to your hat Houston and Galveston.

(on a personal note, the youngest Ubet finally had his appendix operation today. :banger: All is well with him, although the hospital room is extra dark because it has steel hurricane shutters installed in the room covering them. )
