Trey Smith and the Buckeyes? Is this really happening?
If we’re talking about recruiting this week I guess it’s time to address the Trey Smith situation. The country’s 20th-ranked player, an offensive tackle from Jackson, Tenn., is – believe it or not – really, seriously, actually considering Ohio State. He made an official visit to see the Buckeyes last weekend, and since then, there’s been a serious rush of scarlet and gray tinged momentum.
This isn’t just your average surprise on the recruiting trail. Smith has been considered a virtual lock to Tennessee for much of the last year. His sister works for the Volunteers football program, and he’s been at Neyland Stadium more regularly than the stadium ushers have been this season. But the situation, football-wise, at Ohio State (or Alabama, the other primary threat to the Vols) is in significantly bettter shape than it is at Tennessee. Heck, there are rumors floating out of Rocky Top this week that his sister – who, again, works for the Vols – was seen wearing Ohio State shirts to work!
Ohio State’s Greg Studrawa was in Jackson Thursday. Urban Meyer is expected to make a trip there early next week, prior to Smith’s planned announcement on Dec. 7. Nick Saban and Alabama are expected there next Monday as well. Those visits will come directly on the heels of Smith making an official visit to Knoxville this weekend, giving the home team one final shot to overtake the Buckeyes and the Crimson Tide.
Stay tuned, but as of right now, the odds on adding a third 5-star offensive lineman to complement Josh Myers and Wyatt Davis have shot way up.
Supposedly some of Trey Smith's family have been telling people he's going to the Buckeyes. Can't wait to see the meltdown on Volnation when he commits to the good guys
Will fit right in with Wyatt Davis and Jackson Carman.
