sportsline.com said:UNC forward Stepheson to transfer because of family reasons
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina forward Alex Stepheson is transferring because he wants to be closer to his family in California.
Stepheson said Friday in a statement that his family is facing unspecified health concerns.
Stepheson is a Los Angeles native who was the backup to Deon Thompson at power forward. In two years he averaged 3.16 points and 3.36 rebounds.
Coach Roy Williams said he is disappointed but understands Stepheson's decision because "by being closer to home, he will be able to provide the necessary support and help his family needs."
School officials said they have granted Stepheson's request for a release, a move that permits him to contact other programs.

Former Michigan forward Ekpe Udoh told the The Edmond (Okla.) Sun that Oklahoma tops a list of potential transfer destinations that includes Oklahoma State, Baylor, Arkansas, Wichita State and Missouri State.
Udoh also gets a little more specific about why he left Michigan, complaining about coach John Beilein's offense:
'It was just hard for me to adjust to their offense,' Udoh said. 'It just wasn't what I came to college to do.'
Udoh's high school coach also reveals that the forward considered transferring after his freshman season at Michigan.
All in all, nothing very surprising here, except maybe that Udoh's apparently been considering a move since Michigan fired Tommy Amaker, who initially recruited him. The list of schools sounds about right - no college hoop big dogs and, for Udoh, basically a choice between trying to prove he can emerge as a top-flight talent in the Big 12 or try to be a big fish in a smaller pond.
The big man expects to pick a school in early June.

Martin said Wednesday that he called Fighting Irish coach Mike Brey on Tuesday to tell him of his decision. He picked Notre Dame after making visits to Butler and his hometown school, Valparaiso.
Martin said he liked the school and his new teammates, and Brey was a key factor in his decision.
"He lets players play and lets them do what they're good at," Martin said.

"Jordan Crawford and his family informed us today that he will not return to Indiana," the Indiana athletic department announced Wednesday in a release.
Crawford, a 6-foot-4 shooter from Detroit Communication and Media Arts, has been playing pickup basketball recently at UDM's Calihan Hall. Also, the Titans' new coach, Ray McCallum, is a former Indiana assistant who was Crawford's main recruiter out of high school. At the time of McCallum's hiring in April, Crawford's mother, Sylvia, expressed pleasure that UDM had hired McCallum.
ESPN.com said:Clemson, Wake Forest, LSU listed as transfer possibilities for Memphis' Mack
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Guard Doneal Mack wants more playing time than he's receiving with the Memphis Tigers, and his father says his son will be transferring once he receives his release.
The Commercial Appeal reported on its Web site Thursday that the 6-foot-5 guard feels it's time to move on. Greg Mack told the newspaper that they believe it's time to go now with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Team spokesman Lamar Chance told The Associated Press late Thursday that no details of the transfer were available.
Mack averaged 12.5 minutes during the Tigers' run to the national championship game. From Charlotte, N.C., he originally signed with Florida but was denied admission and signed with Memphis late in the summer of 2006. Greg Mack listed Clemson, Wake Forest and LSU as possible schools for his son.
