Training kids for Homeland Security

It's good to see that I wasn't the only one sort of horrified by the idea for various reasons. And the Hitler Youth comparison was one that was in my head too, along with the comment Gator made regarding the location and student pool that is being called upon.

im not entirely sure the hitler youth comment fits with the information you have provided thus far. i didn't see a link for an article so i don't know what age range these schools cater to. buckeye mike made a comment about this being a jv thing but i didn't see anything that indicated that. keep in mind the hitler youth were recruited at around age 10 and actually started in the hitler youth portion at around 13 if i remember correctly.

personally, i don't have a "problem" with it per say. but would need a lot more information before saying one way or another. i would be far more understanding of these schools if this were an after highschool but not an actual college school rather than a jv program. personally i don't see how geometry can be replaced by swat training. but hey, thats just me.

I didn't link because I had posted the full text of the piece I had read. Google is available for more information I'm sure. My Hitler Youth comment/thought wasn't dedicated to the actual age of the students but to the style of "indoctrination" schooling being discussed, with the emphasis being on "homeland security" not a rounded schedule. I can't speak for the meaning behind Sushi's Hitler Youth comment. :biggrin:

np, wasn't sure if there was more to the story or not.

for me, age is a big part of it. if this is an after high school (high school diploma or ged req) but not an actual accredited college im more or less ok with that. to me this would be similar to someone going into the military right out of high school. if this is some sort of funky jv thing. i would certainly have some reservations.

most of what i found on google were college based courses, so im not sure if they are relevant or not.

Seems to me this is just basically a "military" school, only with an emphasis on Homeland Security as opposed to say, the Marines. There are all kinds of similar schools in existence...I had a friend who attended one in Solon, Ohio. He always referred to it as "Reserve", although I am unsure of the exact name. I know there are several in NE Ohio.

Would I send my kid there?

No...

But, Hitler Youth?

Hmm... seems to lack the racial superiority/devotion to the Fuhrer indoctrination/brain washing necessary for that sort of comparison...

It's only missing the racial superiority. With the emphasis less on general education and more on paramilitary exercises, security of the country and thus it's people and leaders, and emphasizing the paranoia and mandated "love of country" necessary to be a good Homeland Security agent all fulfills, IMHO, the indoctrination/brain washing part of it. High school should not include "demolitions" and SWAT training. Post high school "vocational" training at best.

Unfair and uncalled for. To question motives of such an institution is not paranoia. To question motives of any governmentally sanctioned educational institution is smart. And yes, that includes any and all schools currently in operation that may receive any kind of governmental subsidy. I don't have a child but I still pay attention to what is being taught to youth in schools.
