Tough emotional night in Champaign-Urbana

No, they stopped it because they didn't want to be under the NCAA's dipshit sanctions any more...

I think the fact that they are going to be in the NIT this year has something to do with it as well. If they were to make the NIT and earn the right to host a game they wouldn't be permitted becuase of their mascot. Thus they would lose the revenue such a game would provide. The almighty dollar at work again!

I still dont get it and maybe somebody can help me out. Redskin I understand; the crazy indian logo for the Indians baseball I understand; what I dont understand is how having an Indian mascot shows any disrespect. How different is it to say having a Viking mascot or Trojan mascot or any other one that is out there. All of the native american (hate that term anyways since even the "native americans" more than likely migrated across from asia and are no more native than anybody else that followed em) teams that have football/basketball mascots in my area have Indian mascots. Why is an Indian mascot only offensive when it is used by a non-indian school. Can only Norwegian schools use vikings as their mascot. The whole thing is silly in my opionion and to have the school logo of something you admire as your mascot is something each school should be proud of and not let a few determine what is or is not appropriate for each university.

I'm not sure how many of you have been following this story. Tonight was the last night of Chief Illiniwek's performance at halftime of Illini's bball games. The U of I stopped this because they did not want to offend Native Americans.

There's been a lot of dissension about this, Ohiost8. Not much will change the NCAA on this one. Clearly, it's time to leave it to the coaches, bury the hatchet, and move on...:slappy:

Spare me your melodrama.

Maybe since your sports program is in shambles you don't know the meaning of a "tough, emotional night" It usually has to do with the play on teh court/field as to whether some idiot is allowed to dress in a costume or not.

A "tough" night is when that Illinois basketball player wrapped his car around a tree, thought his teammate who was the passenger was dead and then drove home and did not call 911.
