Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

10-2? Ehhhhhhh...

This is one of those rare (for us) one week at a time seasons. It's a transition year. If we were to get to 8-4 with a decent bowl, I'll be happy. Expectations kick back in in 2015.

Given the schedule and such, I think 3-loss at most should be expected.
I knew this one would be tough with all the new starters, imploding D from last year, trying to transition to the new O... especially after Brax went down and then we got a glimpse against Navy of why Urban was so worried about the OLine.
A lot of those "OR" on the 2deep should get taken care of after today. The staff should have a clear idea of whose "separated" themselves, as they say.
Another warmup against a Kent St that's even bad in the MAC, and then a mediocre Cinci and Maryland. That's 3 games to iron out this team's offensive identity and start getting the silver bullets going again (I'm excited, we saw glimpses of it tonight).

There's ways to deal with what VTech was doing tonight, so I think it's fair to expect the staff to draw those plays up and start using them. Adapt and Overcome. They didn't manage it tonight, but no reason they shouldn't be able to over the next couple of games.

If you're just hIre to bash, go to bed. JC, they lost like 90% of the playmakers from last year. VT is a good team and had a great plan. Breaks went their way. It was close late in the 4th. Can't win them all... etc., etc.
Its not that though. D played their hearts out and the O wanted it. Look at JT making huge plays that last drive up until the pic. Young mistake and their were quite a few. I can live with that. What I cant live with is the coaching leaving this young man out to dry. Didn't really give the kid a chance. All the PA was laughable. Young offense isnt being handled well. Growing pains are fine, but what we saw tonight is more than that.

How anyone watched the game I just watched and says it was on the defense is beyond me. They were the best if all 3 phases. Not even saying they were good, moreso the best by default. Special teams produced nothing but 2 missed fg's, a shanked punt that led to a short field td and a kick out of bounds that led to a short field td. And the offense? Lolllllllll.

That 'D' only works against a rookie QB, a weak Oline and an offensive coordinator picking his nose.

I'd love to see the numbers, but I can't remember seeing a defense send 5 + more in any game. I'd wager it was 75% of the downs. And only 2-3 3rd downs did foster not blitz. Although god only knows why not?!? I assume his headset must have malfunctioned.

They sent 3 pressures from the boundary in a row on that last drive because... Why not? Go figure when we get to the other hash, another blitz from the boundary. I know I wasn't the only one screaming it.

It wasn't even good heads up blitzing. Those DB's screamed off the edge with no regard for anything behind them or in front of them other than the QB.

It's mind belong that Herman can't see that from the box.

My thoughts exactly. Who the hell didn't know Foster was going to make us throw the ball and blitz the hell out of the rookie with a new OLine? How many bubbles did we throw? How many bunch sets did we run? How many rubs and picks did we run against the pressure man? They were picking the hell out of our DBs and I never saw us once try a rub route or a crossing pick etc? All we tried were fades for the most part. I think at least three of the sacks went on JTs shoulders, held it too long once, didn't step up in the pocket another, and left the pocket on another. We just kept on keeping on with the max protect most of the time too, never ran any delayed boot releasing the TE either. I thought Herman was pathetic tonight.

Okay, incoming Pollyannishness. I offer it without apology, but this is seriously where my head is right now.

This loss doesn't matter. At. All. Not even a little.

This is not a team that belongs in the four team playoff. We know that now. They may grow into a really solid team, maybe more, but anyone who expected (not hoped for, expected) an undefeated season after losing Braxton for the season was confused. You don't lose an OL, Carlos Hyde, AND Braxton Miller and not suffer for it.

So what happened tonight?

We lost an early season out of conference game. Which means what? We'd do well to contend for the conference title. This weekend proves that the race for that is wide open. So this loss costs us very little in terms of that quest.

What does it do for us? That's the sort of pressure we could certainly see from Michigan State. We've seen it, we failed the test spectacularly, and now we can get to the business of working on it.

JT? That poor kid. Played like a freshman, but was abused like Joe Germaine against Florida State (okay, maybe not THAT bad). He kept hope alive until the end of the game, at least until he threw it away. But here was a kid who got very little help from the playcalling, his OL, and his receivers. This was failure by committee.

It's going to be a long season. A lot of us were saying and thinking that we're probably a 2-loss team (give or take) after news of Miller broke. Maybe it's 2, maybe it's 4 -- but we've got one under our belt. Let's hope this loss means we're less likely to take another one later when it counts, against a conference opponent.

After losses in the past I've felt crestfallen, and it was clear I'd carry a funk forward. Maybe it's because I have a different perspective now because of two other clear and present factors dominating my personal life right now -- but I don't feel that funk coming on here. Wish we had won, have WAY too many VaTech fan friends for that not to be true -- but I don't feel injured by this one. As above, I don't think it has cost us a thing.

Maybe that is Pollyannish, maybe it's sour grapes. I don't know. We came back and had hope, and VaTech put on an impressive display defensively. Try to feel okay about this one. That's not loser mentality, it just is what it is.
Well recruiting. Minor fact of having every big recruit we're in in watch us pull out pants down, curl in an odd position, and give ourselves a Cleveland steamer.
