Game Thread tOSU vs. Sparty, Sat 11/21, 3:30pm ET, ABC

Sparty only rushes 153 yds/gm and they have seen nothing like the Buckeyes. My guess is that they come out with this Ohio kid and try to establish the run immediately, with lots of screens, draw plays, short crossing routes, and quick passes to the tight ends to take the pressure off Cook.

I'm also guessing that a small problem with munitions dooms that strategy in the last home game for a few Buckeyes...

That's about how I see it

High 30's to low 20's if Cook is good to go. He isn't 100% or gets knocked out of game then fugedaboutit.

To use past opponents as a proxy, I see Sparty as a Western M*ch*gan offense with a Pen State defense. Not to be taken lightly but also not going to win without a lot of OSU help.
A psu defense if all of the dbs are still hungover from a massive party.

Tried that in 2013 and he did (albeit against a worst defense)

Don't believe their RB is that great..would rather protect the pass and make their RB win
What they tried is irrelevant. They didn't stop any part of that offense, largely because the osu defense was woeful.

The Sparty rbs are fine. Their run blocking is trash and frequently puts them behind requiring Connor heroics just to get first downs let alone scores. They have some talented receivers that can fight for the football in the traffic but I like osu's chances overall, especially given the punishment that Bosa and company regularly deliver before, during or right after throws.

Their special teams is trash that has been rotting for months on end.

They have a disruptive d line and active and talented linebackers but their secondary is horrendous. It was terrible from the first snap, then they lost a lot of guys to injury and demotions for being terrible.

OSU should win this comfortably but they rarely are within miles of what they should do hopefully that changes as the real season begins.

Everyone has their own definition of "should do" but one way to measure it is against the spread. OSU has covered the last 3 games JT Barrett either started (Rutgers, Illinois) or played the most (Penn State).

They were well on their way to covering vs Maryland until the backups had a couple of hiccups.

Just throwing it out there

They're good but they're not better than PSU IMO. I think Zettle, Johnson, and their tall end is a better trio than MSU will show us.

Not worried about 2 of 4 dline man being good when we have played tech, PSU, and even Illinois (who has a end just as disruptive as calhoun). For a team to give us problems IMO both ends have to be good/great and not just one. As jax pointed out Calhoun is about all they have in consistent pressure.

Illinois was better than I expected. PSU, for all the hype, didn't give OSU much trouble. I have a feeling MSU will be better than what we've seen.

I'm not dedicated enough to go back and read all prior 11 pages, so I don't know if this has been brought up. I have found it very curious that a senior QB is not a team captain at Michigan State. Maybe I'm too old school in my thinking, but you hardly ever see that. I believe Sparty elects their captains from within the team with Dantonio holding a veto. The implication of Cook not being a captain is that he is not liked or respected among the guys he plays with. That was OK as long as they were a team led by their defense, but this year, they have needed to outscore people, and have largely done it with him throwing the ball.

Does anyone else think this is significant, or at least curious? If I am up a tree on a shaky branch just say so.

Dantonio explained it away a few weeks back. Something to the effect that Cook was a leader regardless of title and something something grumpy.

Like JWins said, they have won a lot of 50/50 balls in the passing game, largely against average corners. That ends Saturday.
