Game Thread tOSU vs. Northern Illinois, Sat 9/19 @ 3:30pm ET, ABC/ESPN2

I don't watch it too, but I think Alabama is probably getting more attention.
As I googled to find the game results this morning, I saw an ESPN article with the headline "Why not Ole Miss?" because heaven forbid they aren't in the top five and the SEC overrated circle jerk doesn't continue. I'm just curious if Arkansas will still count as a quality win for the rest of the SEC.

Yeah, the entire state. Especially after both Barn and Bama got poo'd on.

We looked bad on offense yesterday but guess what - we at least won unlike Bama, USC, and Auburn.

Hell we looked equally unimpressive vs Minnesota and Indiana last year but what was important is that we escaped with the win.

Agreed. Margin of victory is of no concern here. Righting the ship offensively should be the focus.

Ohio State plays Tressel ball to beat Northern Illinois

Stout defense and steady special teams were enough to overcome a stagnant offense, and it might have been a fitting tribute by Ohio State to the former coach who was on hand for a while to watch it.

With Jim Tressel honored on the field at the Horseshoe to celebrate his induction into the school's hall of fame, the Buckeyes reverted to a style of play he made famous with the program -- though it won't be an outing the guy in charge now will remember fondly.

Good headline ESPN !!!

Just re-watched the game and have more thoughts:

1 - God bless Chris Ash
2 - I wasn't as upset with the play calling after reviewing it - no one calls a perfect game but it wasn't that bad
3 - Other teams have guys that can make plays too, tOSU is not the only team in the country with good players
4 - The Oline was not that bad either, most of the time tackles are being made by run help saftey
5 - Poor execution and just not making plays - dropping too many hand offs and just ball handling and security which stems from concentration
6 - Braxton didn't get many plays or touches, and in Urbans defense he dropped a couple of his opportunities
7 - First half especially, piss poor routes on 3rd down, get to the damn sticks please - killed three drives
8 - I will make the argument that EZE has more running room with JT at QB instead of Cardale due to the read option taking one man in the box away, which I know Urban uses the QB draw and has EZE block vs the same front but I like EZE running better with JT freezing one defender instead of EZE blocking same said defender and Cardale with the ball in his hands.
9 - Special mention on defense goes out to Diesel, Bell, and Lee.
10 - EZE is an outstanding blocker and I love his ability to catch the ball, but he did miss a few holes and cuts yesterday, turf monster grabbed him twice, which again is execution in my opinion.
11 - I am still not a fan of Marshall returning punts, he damn near muffed another in a key 4th quarter spot had he lost it, could have cost us the damn game. Get the hell away from the ball if you can't catch it cleanly.
12 - JT not real accurate, threw some balls behind guys, and threw some balls late. Still like him better than Cardale, but he wasn't real sharp either.

We just need to execute better, get to the sticks, sustain a block a little longer, hold on to the damn ball, pick your feet up, break some tackles, make a guy miss, make a damn play. We didn't make a lot of plays and they had some guys that did on key downs.

.

I agree with this. JT isn't real accurate right now but how much does that have to do with him having to come off the bench? He wasn't sharp at all but this offense was able to score 10 points with him running it so he would be my choice to start next week. A change has to be made because a starting QB has to be picked prior to the Big 10 games starting. I say tell both QB's that they will play next weekend and if JT lights it up, if he starts, he is your QB the rest of the year. Cardale has had opportunities to seize the job and he seems to be regressing.

If I am Urban, I tell the team absolutely no twitter during the season. It seems like this team is believing the hype and not focusing and concentrating on what they need to do to become a better team each week.

Play calling is predictable right now. If JT is your man, stick with the read option and throw in some short to intermediate passes to keep the Defense honest. Throw it deep every now and then to keep the secondary honest. If Cardale is your man, scrap the read option all together. Run the Pistol and let EZE get straight ahead instead of going sideways. This also would allow Cardale to utilize the rocker step instead of having to run the read each play. Last year when he was passing using the rocker step, he seemed to be more comfortable and was able to look downfield quicker. With Cardale, quit going for the home run each play. Utilize 10 to 15 yard routes up the middle and quick slants. This will make the safeties have to play more towards the middle of the field, which will then open the outside for those long bombs down the sidelines. Running wise, get the damn ball straight up field. Let the linemen fire off the ball and impose their will instead of pussy footing around running a sweep every dang play.

WR play is abysmal right now. Other than Michael Thomas, no one seems to be able to get open with any sort of regularity and the blocking on running plays has been less than stellar. Someone needs to step up and show that they can consistently make plays to move the chains.

I was in a wedding yesterday so I only got to see some of the game.

All the props in the world to the defense. They certainly weren't perfect, but they kicked ass in key moments and it's clear that OSU has 2-4 of the top defenders in all of CFB. Only issue seems to be the interior of the line and that's been known since camp. I guess there were a few issues with contain too, but I think that can be fixed with relative ease.

It was good to see Joey get in on a few plays. I didn't get to see a shrug, but I saw he had a .5 sack. Hopefully he lived up to expectations. I really really wish Lee was a true sophomore. Guy is a monster. Glad that Lewis and Hubbard are stepping up.

As for the offense...well, what can you say that hasn't already been said? There is no rhythm, everyone looks uncomfortable, and the execution is terrible. 5 turnovers against NIU??? They are a very solid team but... Honestly it really looks like a Tressel offense at the beginning of the season when they were working on 15 different things and were completely discombobulated. The OL and QB play are the most obvious issues, but even watching Elliot, he seemed to miss lanes and cutbacks. All I know is that there are way too many good or great players on this team for this to be happening. It's very disconcerting and I, along with many others I'm sure, am radically adjusting my expectations for this year.

Id remove the RBs personally. We have 3 lost fumbles in three games and then zeke muffed a punt.

There Isn't one unit strong on offense. Not to be too rough but thats just how I see it

I originally said Three and then changed it to Four (adding the RBs). Needless to say, I agree with you. Just trying to give the benefit of the doubt.
