tOSU vs ILLINI (Merged All)

Alan said:
I guess tOSU has won 5 of its last 6 vs. #1 teams (acc. to espn)
That's correct. We lost to #1 ILL this year, but before that we had a 4 game winning streak vs. #1, the last one was IU in 93. We are now 7-9 (43.7%) all time vs. #1.

Did anyone catch the halftime report of the UK/FLA game?

They showed a postgame interview with Sylvester and Matta. Apparently Sylvester pulled a Jimmy Chitwood move and told Matta during the TO that he would make the shot.

2 observations:

2) Matta has an advantage with recruiting in that he knows his team isn't going to the postseason so he can hit the recruiting trail early and hopefully get his foot in the door with several recruits.

Won't it be nice to mention to the recruits their last game of the regular season was a defeat of the number one team in the nation.

Yes, upsets are definately part and parcel of the sports world. I imagine this says more about Illinois having a terrible night than it does about Ohio State being anywhere near a good team. After all, Ohio State is not ranked in any polls, has an 8-8 record, and is currently in 6th place in an 11 team conference.

For anyone who will be at the Illinois game on Sunday, please bring your vocals. I have a feeling that something special could happen. Illinois is awesome, but I have that feeling ya know? Maybe it's the beer........

I'll be there rooting for the impossible. Go Bucks!!!!

I guess my feeling was right! Wow, what a damn basketball game. I feel privledged to have been a part of a game that will go down in OSU history as one of the all time biggest upsets.

I am sorry Sears and Alan, you two are truly some of the greats on this site but of all times NOT to be thinking of the idiots and nay sayers, this should be one of them! Revel in the moment because this is truly one of the great ones for OSU college basketball, heck for OSU sports !!! Don't even think of letting some of these less then reputable "so called" reporter become the main topic and belittle a truly GREAT moment for OSU fans and players. More importantly don't let em bring you down with their stupid antics. Some people can write all they want negatively, but it's always your choice to let them get to you or not. Either way don't bring it up on this forum at a time like this .... :)
Enjoy the moment !!!!! GO BUCKEYES !!!!
THEE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES WE JUST BEAT THE #1 TEAM IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL TODAY
WooooooooooooooooooooHooooooooooo my fellow Buckeyes !!!!

When I was growing up, it was a magic time for Ohio State (Woody, Fred), Ohio (Browns) and Columbus (Nicklaus, Pittsburgh golden era farm team) sports. You always kinda felt that your team would win.

Tonight's game reminded me a lot of that era. I really think we are back there guys. Right on the edge of it. All of this adversity has hardened our athletes and coaches. Made us better.

The last quarter of that game was what it was like to witness Nicklaus making a charge on the last nine holes from five or six back. It was unbelievable but you knew it was going to happen.

This day will go down in the annals of Ohio State sports and we were there to witness it.

I still get goosebumps thinking about it. I wish my father had lived to see this. This was a great one.

:oh:  :groove:  :io:

How much if any does the win over Illinois help recruiting. IMO it helps a little especially with kids that want to play early on a promising team.

osugrad21 and I have already commented on how this will significantly help our recruiting. How can it not?

I really think it's a distinct possibility, sacs. You'd have to pick Illinois, but Terence Dials is probably the most powerful low-post player in the conference, and if the Bucks can just keep enough defensive intensity for 40 minutes to make Illinois work for it, and heat up on the perimeter J's, I really think we've got a shot.
I wouldn't have thought we'd have a reasonable chance with 3-15 from beyond the arc, but I didn't foresee the emergence of The Matt Sylvester Experience, either.

Just got back from the game.

From the get go, it was amazing with the amount to fans that Illinois had packed in the Schott. Most were pretty cool, but you had patches of cocky ass students, that is to be expected.

Illinois jumped out to their lead early, you heard "here we go again" grumblings in the crowd. But somehow, although they played pretty lousy in the first half, and had some poor officiating, OSU hung around. They chipped at the lead in the 2nd half, you could feel the electricity build in the sold out Schott. We kept hitting big buckets, Illinois answered. Finally we got it down the two, and made a couple of nice defensive stands. Then, Matt Sylvester stamped his seal on one of the greatest upsets in OSU basketball history by hitting a totally unexpected three. It's kind of funny, I was talking to a guy in behind me during the timeout, and said "do you think they have the balls to go for 3?", we both figured that OSU would play for overtime since they had Brown and a few others in foul trouble.

I have not witnessed an atmosphere like that at a basketball game, I've seen it a few times in football (NC State 2003, Marshall 2004, Michigan 2004 of recent). This is truely something for Matta and the program to build off of, and is a huge stepping stone going into next year, a season that I feel will have higher expectations.

I took great joy watching the same cocky Illinois fans walk out of the Schott with the heads down, grumbling what went wrong? Talking about how their coaching staff will be ripping ass. I say this in defense to Illinois, I think a loss at this time in the season probably helped them more than hurt them. I'm an Illinois fan come tourney time. Unbelieveable game today, finally OSU makes the national headlines for something they did on the playing field. Stick it in your ass ESPN, I bet you'll hate to have to lead into Sportscenter with the OSU upset.

Woohoo, it's great to be a Buckeye!
