tOSU vs BYE, Sat. Oct 16th (High Street History)

When I was a frosh, the towers were new and The Shoe was actually that. The only time I could run the track a full quarter-mile was during summer quarter. Those were good, very good, times.
Even in the 80’s the south stands were bleachers that were only erected for football season. You could freely walk into the stadium at any time. A friend and I used to go out on the field and toss my Aerobie flying ring around. We didn’t get it to go from end zone to end zone but it was pretty close.

The spring game was free to students and practically no one showed up. There were students studying in the stands, and some just lying down getting a tan. The attendance might have been in the hundreds at best and I think that’s being generous. I honestly don’t remember seeing any alumni and their families at those games back then. It just wasn’t a thing.

Yep. We used to throw a football around down there and even punt it. On days when it was raining to hard to practice during our two-a-days for soccer, they ran us underneath the east stands and we did some "steps" when it was dryer. I even referee Special Olympics soccer down there a couple of summers.

That is one hell of an old building. Long may she stand proudly!

Yup, I paid twenty-one bucks for a home student season's ticket in the fall of 1967. Great times at the C & G Pizza and South Berg.

Yup, me too. Did you forget ever frequent the Travel Agency and/or Serene Lounge?......

RIP South Heidelberg.

Actually, I had my pregame meal (i.e. Hawaiian Pizza) last Saturday above the former site of the "North Berg"
(i.e. Donatos' basement):

I realize I'm a homer and have plenty of company..but I'm starting to feel really good about this team since the Oregon game.

They developed nicely and I see Freshman all over the roster playing very well. If the D has improved enough to compliment the O, then it's not wrong to be optimistic ( which I always am ). I see good things ahead .

Line them up. Knock them down.

And Wednesday nights there, in particular.
My first apartment was just a block up 9th Ave. it’s not there anymore either. But the South Berg used to have a great lunch special where you could get a sub, chips, and soda for just a few bucks. And they made a good sub.

I spent more nights there than I could count. Monday nights when Local Color played used to be the big night. Then Dave Katz started hosting an open mic night on Wenesdays, John Mullins joined in (RIP John), and soon Ekoostik Hookah was born. Then Wednesdays were the big night. I was there to witness all of that evolution. I saw some other Ohio jam bands there like Oroboros out of Cleveland and the River Runt Spookfloaters out of Cincinnati. They did a good cover of Steely Dan’s Josie.

Met some girls there. Shot pool. Smoked pot in the restroom or at the top of the back stairs. I can’t remember who was playing on Friday, June 17, 1994, but I saw the white Bronco carrying OJ Simpson getting chased by the cops on the tv monitor in the bar. I didn’t really understand the magnitude of the story until I got home. Heck, I wasn’t even living on campus anymore at that point. I was living off Bethel Rd. and working at CompuServe. I wonder who that band was. I suppose it had to be Hookah.

ON THE BYE WEEK
  • Day said they're keeping the schedule the same this week to build some consistency.
  • "I felt like the routine was important this year."
  • Day said some players will get more rest than others, but he wants everyone to "keep their edge."
  • "We have to keep building. We've got some really good teams in this second half."
ON WHAT HE'LL DO THIS WEEKEND
  • Ryan Day said he'll take a break this Saturday and won't do much mentally.
  • Day said mental rest is just as important as physical rest.
  • Day said he'll probably watch some football on television, however. "I just get to watch other people stress out and be a fan for a little bit."
  • Day said he doesn't really know when a good time for a bye week is, but it's always good to have break.
