tOSU vs. #20 ttun, Sunday Feb 16, 1 ET on CBS

Comparing Auburn football to tOSU football in any way, shape, or form should be an immediate lifetime ban and forfeiture of your $79 annual dues. Have they played a meaningful game after the 4th game of the season at all this century? Just like Ohio State? Have you considered that maybe they've given up on football and are now a basketball school?
Auburn has completely dropped any scruples or integrity they might have had (actually, they've never had any). Freeze as football HC and Pearl as BB HC. That must be the most toxic, shady and corrupt athletic dept in the country. Freeze had success in rebuilding his brand, and has just failed at Auburn. Pearl is the opposite right now - he's killing it, but it's taken over a decade there. Seems like Auburn swang for the fences with both hires and one was just a swing and miss. And they are 10th in NIL, according to this article, just ahead of OSU. (Somehow that article talks in hundreds of millions and I thought the highest was $23M...)

Which makes comparing them to tOSU even more egregious.

Well obviously the outcome sucks, but I was only able to catch the last 8 minutes or so of the game. Had some friends in town this weekend and unfortunately couldn't focus on that little piece of the game. What I did see was a team putting out enormous amounts of effort on the offensive that was countered by really good shooting in the clutch from ttun.

I get that we should have a better record and this should be a tourney team, but is there anything other than this game being ttun that specifically has fans riled up about coaching any loss to ttun makes me angry as well to be clear)? Again, missed most of the game so I am just curious...Diebler is a young coach that will need to improve results moving forward without a doubt, but no way we cut ties before giving him another 1-2 years of opportunity to do so.

I eventually called for CH's job despite liking him so much personally, but I gave it plenty of time before I wanted to see him go. The eject button for our basketball coach is slower than football and in this case it would make even more sense, Diebler is undoubtedly adjusting to a new and much bigger role at a young age.

Obviously the detractors are seeing Diebler as an extension of Holtmann, lumping them together and criticizing the decision to not really consider other coaches like Dusty May as another irritant. The fact that UM is having a lot more success with both of us having first year coaches is obviously a concern. That being said, it's his very first year and you're right you just don't make abrupt coaching changes at this program. I will add a lot of OSU fans had their pitchforks and torches out for Ryan Day after the UM loss, so let's not act like the knee-jerk reaction from fans who to want to fire a coach is always wise.

Thanks for weighing in, that is what I had presumed but just haven't kept up with this season as much I would have liked to and all the banter that goes with it. I thought the pitchfork crowd was coming out way too early on Diebler, but thought maybe I was missing something.

On Day, you can't go 0-4 against ttun with no titles and realistically expect the pitchforks to come out from pretty much all of our fans, but then he totally redeemed himself. Even Day knows that. But more to the point with Diebler, there has to be some leeway to allow him to build the program and learn the ropes in the HC gig. I guess my best analogy is that OSU could have made a Belichick-type hire (or the like in terms of a top coach hire, use whatever name you want) with football, in basketball we have to realistically give it more patience than 1.5 years. There are games left to be played this season though and hopefully we can parlay that into a tourney appearance and better season next year.

As to this game, I thought the team looked good from what I saw and just happened to not come out on top. Time is dwindling though, so better stack the wins fast.

The biggest difference, in my opinion, between OSU and Michigan records is one team has won a lot of close games, and the other has lost a lot. I think this loss makes 5 games by 3 points or less. If those 5 are wins, the record looks a lot better and has us in the top 25. Of course, we’ve also won a couple close ones too. I liken it to the Dodgers and Pads in baseball. I’m a huge Dodgers fan. The Dodgers win an incredible amount of games by 1-2 runs every year which makes the 95-100 overall wins look incredible. On the lopsided, the Pads lose about the same amount of games by 1-2 runs that the Dodgers win. You flip the two team’s fortunes, and it’s a whole different ballgame. No pun intended. That’s the way sports go. As a lifelong Browns fan of 50 years, I couldn’t tell you the amount of games they have lost by a last minute score. Too many to count. The issue becomes how to get over the hump. Hopefully, in a year or two, Diebler will get us there.

Them not even considering other coaches is the major irritant. I don't think excusing the lazy hire with "well we are a football school" excuse like some is a really good one. I hope it ends up working out but as you mentioned I still see Diebler as a extension of Holtmann, if he proves me wrong, great. Right now though it's not really encouraging though IMO.

Ohio State isn't a top 5 type all time powerhouse in basketball, but we should definitely not be at the "well we lost but at least we didn't lose by too much to good teams!" level.

Michigan 2024 transfers:
Dusty May
images

Vladislav Goldin (FAU) - 15.7 ppg, 6.2 reb
Danny Wolf (Yale) - 12.9 ppg, 10 reb
Tre Donaldson (Auburn) - 12.7 ppg
Roddy Gayle (Ohio State) - 10.8 ppg
Sam Walters (Alabama) - 5.0 ppg
Rubin Jones (N Texas) - 3.6 ppg

Ohio State 2024 transfers:
Jake Diebler
images

Micah Parrish (San Diego State) - 12.2 ppg
Meechie Johnson (South Carolina) - 9.1 ppg (played in just 10 games)
Sean Stewart (Duke) - 5.8 ppg, 6.0 reb
Aaron Bradshaw (Kentucky) - 6.6 ppg, 2.8 reb
Ques Glover (Kansas State) - 4.7 ppg

Compare the 6 guys Michigan picked up in the transfer portal this season to the 5 guys Ohio Stater got. I think it all comes down to Dusty May doing much better in the transfer portal than Jake Diebler. Now May had the inside track on bringing Goldin with him from FAU; however, needless to say getting 4 guys averaging in double figures which 2 are seven footers that are killing it on the boards was a real plus. Diebler "took a flier" on two highly recruited 5-Star freshmen Sean Stewart (from Duke) and Aaron Bradshaw (from Kentucky) and (so far) they just haven't "panned out".

You're right, the portal has been HUGE for UM this year and OSU didn't get enough out of the portal to make up for what they lost. Some of my hopes for this season were based on how well Meechie played last year at South Carolina, and the fact that he has been a non-factor for this team has been a big setback. I'm not sure how much NIL variance played into the level of recruits we got compared with UM, but certainly we got lesser quality players overall. We can't go another year without a strong, physical post presence.

How many of those guys will be back next year for each school?
