Game Thread tOSU @ Virginia Tech, Sep 7 2015 @ 8pm ET, ESPN

Not saying we're going to put up 550 yards on them, but 40+ points should all be expected. We should've had 30+ points last year if not for numerous drops. Also, I don't see Miller as the starter, and if Barrett starts the implied reduction in Zeke's productivity should be offset by Barrett's running.
Right, that's what I'm getting at. Beyond saving him for the postseason and spreading the ball around, Zeke dominated in that game because Cardale was not as effective on the option (it also helped that he broke off tons of long runs). I don't think Zeke will come close to that total in a balanced rushing offense.

I don't think Braxton starts either. If Cardale starts, some combo of Braxton/Barrett will add 50-85 yds per game imo (especially if Braxton is lining up at h-back).
VT doesn't have anyone in the same galaxy as Melvin Gordon...
Obviously. I just shudder every time I see Carter on roller skates on that drive and realize they didn't trust the youngsters. Munger flashed a few times in the title game though that's against what Oregon calls an OL.

I'm really hoping Hale can return and provide consistency at the position. He doesn't need to be great but he played early and often on some pretty disciplined lines before switching to the OL.

Can't disagree at all with any of this. With Miller at H-back, along with Zeke at RB and either Jones or Barrett taking snaps, I don't see how VT can consistently game plan for that attack...

It's also the first game for VaTech. The talent gap is significant. The OSU OL has grown from the second-most inexperience OL in the entire country struggling with the "bear front" to one that ranks among the best and tenacious in college football. If you don't think Meyer and the entire team has had this game circled since about 30 minutes after last year's game, you may want to rethink that. They have a serious score to settle, and Meyer's good teams have a habit to being able to do that (see Florida's 49-10 curb stomping of Georgia in 2008 after losing 42-30 the previous year).

All true, however, I just watched the Navy game again, and Ohio State struggled in that game until D Lee took the fumble back, and even then, it wasn't all that pretty. And of course, when they faced an upgrade in talent the next week, all the problems they were struggling with came to the forefront.

That said, coming into this year the questions are fewer and the confidence will be higher. The OL will be a strength, Zeke is proven and I feel good about Samuel, pick a QB and you can't go wrong, we are loaded at H back, Thomas and Smith are experienced, Vannett should be a stud, we only need to see how our D line goes with 2 new guys, how we are at RT, and whether our CB's can hold up. Kickers should be solid to excellent. We need to find a receiver who can stretch the field deep consistently. And we don't know which relatively unknown player is going to blow up. Noah Brown, Terry McClaurin, Jamie Dixon, etc.?

All that said, I just haven't seen too many teams look impressive in game 1. Last year T A&M looked like world beaters in their game at SC, and we saw how that turned out. I think the Bucks are capable of playing at a high level on Sep 7, I'm just not counting on it.

Had a dream last night that I over slept and missed half this game. Woke up cursing myself this morning. Haha. We were winning 14-7 when I turned the game on, and it was a day game. Lol.

And no black jerseys in my dream, FWIW. 8D

It seems to me that we're overemphasizing the offensive struggles against VT last year and underemphasizing that the OSU D didn't have its act together yet in that game either. The D should be light years ahead of where it was in that game, and all of the short VT possessions will let the OSU OL grind meat early and often. I'll forecast an OSU statement from start to finish and something like a 45-10 final.

The Navy game has absolute zip to do with this year's VT game. Navy's DL was the absolute worst DL our green OL could've faced, and this year the OL doesn't have to. VT's rush defense ended up #39 for last year, and that's against teams like William & Mary (FCS), Western Michigan, East Carolina, Wake Forest, Boston College, North Carolina, and Pitt. We return 4 of 5 starters on the OL that mauled Wisconsin's, Alabama's, and Oregon's DL. I keep saying it, but our OL has a statement to make, and it's going to be fucking medieval...

As bad as the Buckeyes played last year, ***if*** they had made the (2) missed field goals, the final drive would have needed another field goal instead of a tying td. And OSU won total yardage by 3 yards and held VT to 3 yds per rush.

But, but, but the VT loss put a huge chip on the team's shoulder which turned out to have a somewhat positive effect. :biggrin2:

btw, this will be the Buckeyes 4th straight game away from home and the previous 3 they did ok ...
