Michigan State Recap
1. Let's start with the obvious: CJ Stroud. I'm not sure if Stroud won the Heisman yesterday afternoon, but he certainly put himself in the pole position. Stroud was 21/26 (.808) for 361 yards (13.9 yards per attempt), 6 TDs, an INT, and a sack. Stroud threw a 69-yard TD pass to Emeka Egbuka (5 receptions, 143 yards, TD), a 51-yard TD pass to Julian Fleming (4 receptions, 81 yards, TD), and three more TD passes to Marvin Harrison Jr (7 receptions, 131 yards, 3 TD).
2. For the season, Egbuka has 35 receptions for 655 yards and 6 touchdowns, while Harrison has 31 receptions for 536 yards and 9 touchdowns. Here are their numbers projected over a 13-, 14-, and 15-game season:
Obviously, both Egbuka and Harrison should be frontrunners for the Biletnikoff Award, but neither will win it because they didn't enter the season with any name recognition. Expect Southern Cal's Jordan Addison to win his second undeserved Biletnikoff over a superior Ohio State receiver.
3. After sitting out last week, TreVeyon Henderson returned to action with 19 carries for 118 yards (6.2 average) and a touchdown. With Miyan Williams out with a injury, Dallan Hayden saw an increased role (14 carries, 70 yards) in the offense.
4. Cade Stover had a quiet game (3 receptions, 6 yards). Gee Scott Jr. had his first touchdown reception as a Buckeye. Mitch Rossi appears to be an NFL-calibre blocker; I wonder if he can find a place in the League as an H-back.
5. The Buckeye defense held Sparty to 13 points; 202 total yards on 48 plays (4.2 yards per play); and 22:46 time of possession. Sparty's first offensive touchdown came at the end of a 7-play, 76-yard drive, which certainly looks impressive until it is put into the proper context: Sparty gained 30 of those 76 yards courtesy of Buckeye personal foul penalties (the first on a 2nd-and-15, the second on a 3-and-7), and 42 more yards on a pair of passes from Payton Thorne to Jayden Reed that had some of our more seasoned members flashing back to Billy Burke and Plaxico Burress. Sparty's second touchdown drive covered 80 yards in 8 plays against the Buckeyes' second unit, which didn't seem to be playing with a level of urgency that you might expect from kids who are trying to make names for themselves.
6. Sparty ran the ball 20 times for just 7 yards (12.6 INCHES per carry). Even subtracting out the sacks (4 for -31 yards), Sparty still managed only 38 yards on 16 attempts (2.4 yards per carry).
7. Entering the season, most of us expected big things from a defensive line that boasted five-star talents such as Zach Harrison, Jack Sawyer, JT Tuimoloau, and Taron Vincent, and freshman All American Tyleik Williams. As things have turned out, the real star on the DL has been Michael Hall Jr (sporting the distinctly unassuming jersey #51). Yesterday, Hall had 2.5 sacks for a total of 20 yards lost. For the season, Hall has a team-leading 4.5 sacks and 7.5 TFLs.
8. With the exception of Cameron Brown, who had a pair of pass interference penalties and a personal foul, the Buckeye secondary had a fairly good game. Lathan Ransom had an interception in the end zone that killed a promising Sparty drive.
