Game Thread tOSU @ Sparty, Nov 8th @ 8pm ET, ABC

I know all games are won and lost in the trenches, and the OL played their asses off and deserve all the credit in the world. The biggest difference though between the two teams tonight and between last year's game and this year's was the Buckeyes' receivers and tight ends versus their back seven and vice versa.

The Buckeyes opened up the run though the pass. Wide receivers won individual battles that made MSU back off their aggressive press coverage and kept the safeties from being so nosy. Wideouts and tight ends to a man all blocked the hell out of the edge. The early runs that set the tone went to the outside, and Elliot and Barrett were able to repeatedly turn the corner for big chunks of yardage. The Buckeyes ran the same play that got stopped on 4th and 2 last year and it was successful every time. The difference this time around was the tight end blocking on that play.

On the other side of the ball, the Buckeyes won the battle of the secondary versus their receiver. It started off poorly with Conley getting picked on, but Eli Apple came in, fought through an injury, and really stabilized that unit. Doran Grant (like so many others) played his best game as a Buckeye tonight. He was my player of the game. He was matched up against their best player and made him a non-factor.

Still buzzing. So many great things to talk about. Gonna be hitting up threads all night and for the rest of the week.

Of all things, the best commentary I've read on the game is in the Washington Post:

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Still going by the name “Ohio State,” a secret football program resurfaced gaudily up north Saturday night. This “Ohio State” emerged from a strange underground that saw it continue to draw 106,000 witnesses at home games but roughly 0.00 interest nationwide. It came back with a few reminders...

Got up late, watching on delay.

First, I want to give credit to the unheralded hero of this victory. Thank you Lee Corso. And to your sideikick frosted tips, so wonderful to see you munching that bagful.

Second, I deeply respect Mr Dantonio. I recommend Ex Lax to remive the expression on his face after the game.

Third, for those who doubted him, what a outstanding performance by Barrett. Guy has ice in his veins. Much steadier on that knee, even if not 100%. Zeke was impressive and so were the receiving corps. For those of us who thought you were holding something back for sparty, thanks to Mr Herman for not letting us down. Kudos to the O line.

Fourth, the young defense. They gave up more than 500 yards and 37 points to a very experienced offense. Three drives: the first three and out, when sparty could have gone up by 14, the next sparty possession when they held them to a missed field goal, and the next sparty possession when they got a first down then punted, changed this game. The halftime lead had to be a real momentum builder. Stuffing that 4th and 5 in the backfield, on a misdirection play that would have worked earler this year, is something these youngsters will cherish for a long time. D line kudos as well.

Fifth, the computers will have Ohio State ranked in the top ten, in the range #3 - #12. Poll voters need to follow and put the Bucks about #7. A decisive win over Minny next week should put the Buckeyes solidly in the top 8 of most polls.

Finally, to those of you who also voted with your hearts in the upset poll, well done!

A great night for a young team!

Some interesting stats:

Michigan + Northwestern = 520 total yards (3.64 yards per play)
Penn State + Indiana = 551 total yards (4.11 yards per play)
Ohio State = 568 total yards (8.48 yards per play)

Michigan + Northwestern + Penn State + Indiana = 39 points
Ohio State = 49 points

Michigan + Penn State + Indiana = 8 for 48 on 3rd and 4th downs (16.7%)
Ohio State = 11 for 15 on 3rd and 4th downs (73.3%)
