Alabama’s Emergence As Fertile Recruiting Ground for Ohio State Continues with Karlos May’s Commitment

Karlos May will be the seventh player from Alabama to play for Ohio State since Nick Saban’s retirement in 2024 – a state where OSU previously had just two players all-time.

No team in all of college football recruited better than the University of Alabama during Nick Saban’s 17-year run coaching the Crimson Tide. Every single one of Saban’s 17 recruiting classes at Alabama ranked in the top five of 247Sports’ composite team rankings. Add in the fact that Auburn was often competing for SEC and national championships, and it was rare for top prospects from Alabama to leave their home state.

Since Kalen DeBoer replaced Saban in 2024, however, Alabama has lost its stranglehold on top talent in its backyard. Mystifyingly, all of the top 15 prospects from the state of Alabama in the 2027 class are now committed to schools other than the University of Alabama. Auburn, meanwhile, is coming off five straight seven-loss seasons.

NIL promises often supersede regional roots in today’s recruiting landscape, and that’s allowed Ohio State – not only with its financial resources, but also its track record of perennially competing for championships and producing early-round NFL draft picks – to have more recruiting success than ever before in states that were historically controlled by SEC powers. There’s no more striking example of that than how quickly Ohio State has created a pipeline of talent from Alabama to Columbus over the last three years.

Just sayin': Alabama isn't doing too well in it's own state.

Karlos May commits to Ohio State: Why the 2027 DL class could top historic 2021 group​

Ohio State may have the backbone of yet another national champion-caliber defensive front after adding Karlos May.

The Ohio State Buckeyes did it again with the commitment of 4-star defensive tackle Karlos May. Not only is the program's Alabama pipeline strengthened with yet another recruit from the Yellowhammer State spurning the Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers for the Scarlet and Gray, but the Buckeyes have found their final infinity stone up front.

May is a one-technique who could also be a three-tech, but he's someone who complements the program's 2027 group nicely. Marcus Fakatou is a five-tech, while DJ Jacobs and Wyatt Smith are edge-rushers by trade.

As Cleveland.com's Andrew Gillis notes, the May commitment gives Ohio State's 2027 high school class perhaps the best group of DL since the 2021 cycle. That class had J.T. Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer, Tyleik Williams, and Mike Hall, which was the crux of an eventual championship during the 2024/2025 CFP.

"The addition of May gives Ohio State not only one of the best defensive line classes in the country, but multiple prospects who can fill a host of different roles. After a handful of tackle additions last cycle, the Buckeyes now have at least one in 2027," Gillis wrote. "Ohio State’s defensive line class is likely complete with the four additions, as May was the last piece to the puzzle for defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

"Now, the Buckeyes seem to have a class that rivals the 2021 cycle that brought the team J.T. Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer, Tyleik Williams and Mike Hall. All four were drafted by NFL teams, and three of those four were around for a national title. It was also the backbone of Ryan Day’s best class while at Ohio State...The Buckeyes are hoping that May’s addition to the class can give them the same results."

OSU's 2027 class will be in a better place to contribute immediately than the 2021 class​

That 2021 class was arguably held back by then-defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, whose system is notoriously difficult to grasp right away. While the results obviously came after a few years, there's no doubt that Matt Patricia could've had those guys contributing sooner if he were the DC instead. Patricia's defensive philosophies focus on his players' talents, and that group was clearly special considering their NFL trajectories.

WOW! How can one compare two DL's, when one produced on the field, and played such an important part in winning a National Championship, versus one that has a shit-ton of promise, but hasn't seen one down on a collegiate football game? Maybe the point I missed, but just tapping the breaks a tad here. Would be more than happy to compare statistics, win/loss/# of Nati's etc AFTER three years. Hope the results are comparable, I really do. Comparing accomplishments made to potential, but yet unproven can be a slippery slope.
