2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Ohio State quarterback prospect narrows list to two

If there’s one position on the football field, recruiting wise, that has been affected the most by the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s probably quarterback. The Buckeyes and new quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis needed the summer for in-person evaluations in the Class of 2022. That was important not just so Ohio State could evaluate young quarterbacks, but also so young quarterbacks and their families would have a chance to evaluate Dennis.

The inability for that to happen has contributed to the Buckeyes being removed from consideration by Raburn (Ga.) 2022 quarterback Gunner Stockton, who narrowed his list to two schools on Thursday morning: Georgia and South Carolina.

Stockton, the country’s No. 2-ranked quarterback, was very high on the list for Ohio State. But without any real chance to grow the relationship with him, the effort from the Buckeyes never really had a chance to get off the ground.

For Dennis and Ohio State, the focus now tightens even more on top-ranked quarterback Quinn Ewers, California prospect Maalik Murphy and a handful of still-being-evaluated talents around the country as the Buckeyes wait for a chance to see updated film.

Not a loss, the Buckeye QB room is a tad full as it is now. Wish there was a bit more separation there, but the true weakness is that there is not a seasoned QB to show the young 'uns the 'ropes' of being a big league QB. Fields showed the two for one year, and expect Gunnar did as well, but now nada. Guess we'll see how well the position coaches coach up the newbies. (like the way used coach as both a noun and verb in same sentence)..Go Bucks! It's a great time to be a Buckeye. (I remember Woodie, ol' 9-3 Earl, and 2-10-1 Coop). These times are truly nirvana.

I forget who else pointed this out but it rang very true to me: The high school programs at the higher levels are running much more sophisticated offenses akin to the concepts you are seeing in college. And the high level QBs are learning these concepts at earlier ages and getting professional advice for years before they hit college. So now you're seeing QBs come in the first year or two and having great success. One example that comes to mind is Sam Howell at NC, who stepped in as a true frosh and looked great (with nowhere near the talent that our QB will have mind you). Let's even use Fields, who shredded it his true sophomore year with almost no time in our system.

I don't want to downplay having a veteran with game experience too much, because it is important, it's just not as big of a deal as it used to be. Plus both Miller and Stroud have had a year in the system learning from Fields, and this year they'll presumably get a spring to work on their game. And if McCord beats them out as a true freshman, well we got one of those good problems because that means he'll be truly special. In terms of separation, I think we're currently in ideal position, although the transfer portal will inevitably come into play over the pecking order is established, but that's a new reality we're just going to have to embrace when we land a 5* QB every cycle. If Ewers sticks (and I think he will btw), that would give us Stroud, Miller, McCord, and Ewers all on the same depth chart. That's unreal.

I know there has been some speculation that GA WR, Antwi is now possibly favoring UGA since his QB just committed to them. But if there's one coach I don't worry about finding talent, it's Hartline. Would the WR number for '22 be 3 WRs?

Probably with the correct three.

Caleb Burton is already in, obviously.

They apparently would like to meet face-to-face with Kyion Grayes before accepting his commitment but he is all but in.

Then they chase Kojo Antwi and CJ Williams until signing day and pull one in for the third WR in the class if they can.

If it’s not a top tier target, and it’s possible additional ones emerge, it seems very unlikely they add a third WR to the class—but you never know how the class numbers will ultimately work out.

5-star tailback Raleek Brown talking to Ryan Day, Ohio State regularly

One player that Alford hasn’t talked with much is California star Raleek Brown, a 5-star prospect from Mater Dei (Santa Ana) High School ranked as the nation’s No. 3 tailback. While Alford hasn’t yet been involved with the 5-f00t-8, 185-pound Brown, someone else with the Buckeyes has been.

“[Ryan] Day texts me all the time,” Brown told Lettermen Row. “I like him and the staff there. It’s a great program with a lot of history and a lot of great players out of there.”

A former Ohio State linebacker is helping the Buckeyes cause in California.

“My big bro Larry Grant talks to me about Ohio State all the time and how much I’d love it there,” Brown said. “He’s best friends with my mentor and I talk to Larry all the time. He’s been where I’m trying to get to and he shares his experiences with me.”

It's nice to have a guy who has worn the colors to be in his corner. Bodes well for OSU.

Larry Grant... wow... that’s a name that was lost in the recesses of my brain

A handful of prospects have been getting the majority of the Buckeyes attention for the last year as Studrawa and Kennedy Cook, his positional assistant, haven’t been able to evaluate prospects in person. The challenge for the Ohio State staff now is whether or not these young players that they’ve focused on are willing to keep waiting out their recruitments with no hard date for the recruiting dead period to end.

Earnest-Greene-by-Birm-Lettermen-Row-1024x614.jpg

Ohio State landed Wyatt Davis and Kourt Williams from St. John Bosco and would like Earnest Greene to be next.

Players like Wisconsin’s Billy Schrauth and Joe Brunner have to get on campus for the Buckeyes to have a shot. The same for 5-star lineman Zach Rice, who made multiple visits to North Carolina this season while Ohio State wasn’t able to get him and his mother to Columbus. Ohio State is very interested in California’s Earnest Greene and Florida’s Tyler Booker, but again, distance is a major factor for each and no in-person communication or visits puts the recruiting efforts in a precarious position. Georgia’s Addison Nichols faces a similar problem. Only Indiana standout Kiyaunte Goodwin has ever been to campus with the Buckeyes, but that was before he was a national recruit or before he was even in high school.

In a recruiting period when things are so hard to sort out, the best case scenario for Ohio State is to find big-time talents close to home. With Goodwin being so close to Columbus, there’s reason to be optimistic in that recruitment. Huber Heights Wayne High School star Aamil Wagner is very much on the Buckeyes radar still, and if he is able to camp at Ohio State this coming summer I’d be stunned if he didn’t earn an offer.

If Ohio State could wrap up a four-man class of Tshabola, Kiyaunte Goodwin, Aamil Wagner and Earnest Greene — and that isn’t a pipe dream by any means — it’d be a group the Buckeyes would be thrilled with.
