tOSU Recruiting Discussion

RB07OSU

Head Coach
Staff member
BP Recruiting Team
Did not see a thread for '17 general discussion but with the commitment of Wade (who I stand with) for '17, I realized how ridiculously awesome this class could be (particularly at WR and DB). In reviewing the guys with offers that are high on us, we can have a somewhat decent shot in the dark at what this class could look like:

QB: Danny Clark (nice to already have our pillar here with a top 5 QB nationally)
RB: Robert Burns? (seems to love us)
WR: Trevon Grimes (a matter of when, not if...5 star WR, maybe the best in the country)
WR: Donovan Peoples-Jones (a top 5 WR nationally and likely a 5 star...could keep the Cass Tech pipeline flowing...in great position here early)
WR: Keyshawn Johnson Jr. (top 100 player and we are in GREAT position...will be a battle but Keyshawn Sr. loves UFM and seems to want his son there)
WR: Danny Davis (does not have an offer yet but incredibly talented top 100 guy from Springfield...if he gets offered, paint the endzones)
WR: Jeff Thomas (I know there are a ton of receivers on here but Thomas is a likely 5 star type guy and has us out front...would be huge if we manage to land Beckner in '15, who is is HS teammate)
OL: Josh Myers (top OT in the country and top 5 overall...cannot let him leave the state and I like where we stand, but it will be a battle)
ATH: Bruce Judson (a matter of when, not if again...a likely 5 star and is perfect for the pivot)
DE: Corey Malone-Hatcher (phenom talent and we are out front here...would be shocked if he does not end up in the S&G...would love to steal this one from Harbaugh)
DB:
Shaun Wade (maybe the top corner in the country and hopefully the commitment sticks...would be a huge coup)
DB: Darnay Holmes (borderline 5 star and Keyshawn's HS teammate...appears to be extremely high on us)
DB: Richard LeCounte (McMillan's HS teammate and likely a 5 star...could play many positions but I thin he will be a killer safety...extremely high on us but there will be a fight with UGA, but I like where we are)
DB: DeAngelo Gibbs (the top rated corner right now and a 5 star from Heyward's old HS in GA...seems we are solidly in the mix)

- Absolutely stacked with potential commits at the skill positions...more names will keep coming but already you have to get giddy. I think at bare minimum we get Clark, Grimes, Davis, Myers, Judson, Wade, and Malone-Hatcher from that list, which is potentially 4-5 five stars out of the gate.

I like that list a lot @RB07OSU but I believe we have always have to go after more Olinemen and Dlinemen. That's the way we stay elite. Skill positions are nice but the trenches are where NCs are won

It definitely will...those positions do not have as much clarity yet though since it is so early. We will get our guys in the trenches but we are just looking at unreal talent this early at the skilled positions. Make no mistake, we are going to be stacked with bigs in this class too...just don't know who they are yet for the most part.

When it's listed like this, the 2017 WR crop is very deep in state alone. I agree with the writer that Grimes and Greene are easy takes, but then what? Especially after and during the summer. Can guys like Richardson, Davis and Harris overtake DSJ? And the article didn't even include Jeff Thomas from East St. Louis either.
And what guys can still emerge after the summer and then the season. 2017 is set up to be classic on paper

Cool 11W article (with graphs):

IT ALWAYS LOOKS COOLER IN GRAPHS. If somebody said, "Ohio State is dominating the B1G in recruiting," you would look at them and say, "Uh, no shit?"

But things, for whatever reason, always look cooler in graphs.

Here are the number of commitments each B1G school possesses, via ESPN's Tom VanHaaren:

And here are how many of those commitments are featured in ESPN's Top 300:

It will be interesting to watch develop. Grimes we will take in a heartbeat but as much as I like Greene, I'm not positive they take him right away. To me, the three you take immediately are Grimes, Peoples-Jones, and Thomas (who I think we are sitting pretty for). We already have Judson committed in the slot and while I would love to have Greene to go with him, I think we will be incredibly selective once Grimes is in this class. Personally, I think you just take 5 if it is Grimes, Judson, Peoples-Jones, Thomas, and Greene. And Davis is right on the cusp. I don't think that scenario unfolds (4 of those 5 would be incredible) but I just don't see how you pass any of those guys up, especially the first 4.

Another point to mention is that 2017 is a pretty good reason to only take 2 WRs in 2016. Mack is an absolute stud and we can take one more, as we are in on some pretty good talent for 2016. But to be honest, it is nowhere near what we are in on for 2017. It is far from a sure thing and we will have to fight to keep these guys on board, but we are going to end up with an unreal WR class for 2017 regardless of how it shakes out.

Its shown with Urban that there isn't ever really a set number of commits for a position if he can identify the "right" guys for that position to fit the system. I haven't seen Thomas mentioned in a very long time, but that doesn't mean much since the class is a year away from signing. I certainly agree with the 4 names you mentioned, but I'm wondering what other new names emerge. It's also crazy that OSU is sitting good with guys like Richardson from Maple Heights, OH and KD Nixon from Desoto, TX
Would the staff take a commitment from Greene in the case they believe that DPJ and Thomas are trending elsewhere, or do they wait and go after them until next years NSD?

Agree with this. Will be curious about Greene and not 100% sure he's a take. I've heard enough good things about him though that it does sound like he'll be a guy OSU will take now despite the wealth of other good options. The fact that he's at IMG and will get great coaching over the next 2 years and maybe help us build a pipeline there might put him over the top.

Some of this stuff will probably sort itself out and we won't land all the guys we think we will. For example, a guy like Peoples-Jones might decide to look elsewhere if Grimes commits and Thomas will be a real battle as well. Being the favorite this far out doesn't mean too much in the long run sometimes.

Overall though, if the Buckeyes can land Grimes and Greene this summer (to go along with Judson, if he sticks), it's a nice situation to be in. Watch the "big 3" in OH of Danny Davis, Javonte Richardson and Jaylen Harris play their junior years and offer whichever 1 or 2 of that group that impresses the most. And then if Thomas and/or Peoples-Jones really do want to be Buckeyes too, I'm sure the staff will figure something out.

2017 is to wide receivers as 2016 is to defensive ends. It is almost unfair the amount of talent Ohio State is going to haul in. Some other schools are going to get some elite players that Ohio State will have to turn away.
