tOSU @ Northwestern, Sat Nov 5, 12pm, ABC

"A hard-fought battle today," Fitzgerald's said of his team's performance. "We had a lot of good happen today. Unfortunately, the bad was the outcome on the scoreboard. I thought plan-wise, I thought our staff put together a really good plan. ... I thought we pretty much executed except for a couple of plays and those ended up being the difference in the game."

"Ryan (Day) has not a good team but he has a great team. A very talented team at every position and I thought our defense, for the most part, did a pretty darn good job of keeping the ball inside and in front. I thought our guys fought their tails off and gave us every opportunity to win against one of the most explosive offenses (in the country)."

And yet the Packers, Bills, Patriots, Giants, and Steelers play in much the same weather and manage to pass the ball effectively. Fields and Stroud are still in learning mode. But maybe it's how the Bears and Browns draft that keeps them from being able to pass in any weather.

While wind does blow in nfl games every week, 30 mph with 50 mph gusts does not

at all

I’m almost 60 and never before today did I see the ball blown, not off the tee, but away from its placement in front of the center. That happened at least once to each team today

Stroud deserves a mulligan because of the wind today
It was far worse than what some are claiming

The receivers not named Harrison deserve no such thing
There were numerous drops

The running game is a giant cause for concern, as is the rushing defense

There are plenty of things that need to be shored up

The ability to throw the ball in a hurricane is not one of them

Didn’t mean to demean Stroud’s effort today. And as we both noted, his receivers didn’t help matters (except Harrison).

I'm glad we won. But given the goal, I'm not going to act remotely happy about this win. Awful weather conditions, on the road against a 1-7 opponent with a chip on their shoulders, missing key players... don't care. Championship caliber teams don't struggle like that against maybe one of the worst 10 teams in CFB. I just don't think this team has "it" unfortunately. Not a spoiled Buckeye fan take, moreso thinking in Ryan Day's head. He can't be happy with that.

Forgettable game, move on to hopefully improve but time is quickly running out.

To me it just seems like our running game is stale. It's the same plays and in the same situations. We always have new passing concepts and gadget sort of plays (TE throw backs etc) but we don't put that same energy into our running game.

At first I likes going under center and bringing in Rossi etc but now I can't stand it. We are a spread team and IMO trying to have Wisconsin formation sets is a mistake. Thats not who we are.

I'm not saying don't run the ball but what I'm saying is spread the field and then run the ball. Things seemed to open up when we went 3 wide and started running zone read. Last I checked a 30+ yard is the same whether in I formation or from shot gun.

The way I look at it is Rossi and Fryar are not one of the top 11 players so playing them sort of takes away from the offense overall.

Speaking of... if Matt Jones is hurt he needs to rest and should've rest this game.

Both halves of that claim are absurd.

It's being offered up like Georgia didn't slug through Missouri 4 weeks ago. Like they didn't set offensive football back 10 years against Clemson last year.

Forget 2002, who slogged constantly.

2014, the great SEC slaying team. So much is made of the turnaround at Sparty. What happened on November 22nd, even later in the year than this? They were winning by 1 score at home against a terrible Hoosier team midway through the 4th. They scored 21 in the 4th qtr to pull away.

Half of the top-6 looked very flawed today, and 2 of the 6 looked dreadful.

Let me know how the "run around for 8 seconds to throw" bama offense would look if held in a northern tornado. I bet the WRs who can't catch would thrive in that setting. (which remains dumbfounding given how they recruit)

OSU has major things to fix. That's a very separate topic from this outlandish claim.

You've been around far too long to pretend like great teams don't get in wimpy slapfights with welterweights during title chases. If that's your primary point, it's a dramatically shortsighted and erroneous one.

can they keep getting away with this? no. but the pieces are there. and a little bit of CJ rushing is a surprising addition

Good points. Seeing 3 of the top 6 lose today really helps this game be okay.

This was a weather game that basically eliminated our best aspects but out of all of that we maybe learned a bit about ourselves.

Maybe now we'll understand that we really need CJ to run occasionally to take the burden off of the OL so much. Which btw I wish he would keep more because he's actually got really good patients to set up his blocks (also has some wheels too).

Them having a zone read fake QB keeper, a naked boot, and a QB power run ready to use tells me they understand the importance. It's just a matter of keeping your most important player healthy on a banged up offense.

If Stroud doesn't have to run again I'll be happy, but knowing he can be proficient is good and can at least make the defense hesitant in the RZ and on short yardage.

The alarm comes from the team struggling in the exact same areas they've been struggling with for three weeks now. Like if this was a one-off performance I'd probably give them a pass and still probably feel good. The fact that they had trouble running the ball against a rush defense ranked in the 100s after struggling the past two weeks should have everyone at the WHAC at Defcon 1 The fact they also gave up 200 yards to an equally poorly ranked rushing offense is also alarming although probably not as much since the defense has shut down much better run teams than NW in the past. Actually I think every single team we've played up to this point has a better rushing offense than NW and the D has mostly handled business. Could've just been an off day. Passing games gets a total mulligan since the wind looked like a total shit show even on TV.

I agree about the ‘it’. They shouldn’t have struggled with NW. Positives they overcame adversity even if continual drops created it. Hull was a. Nifty back and wasn’t easy to tackle. But in the end something is lacking..and most of its in the run blocking or run scheme. We have NFL caliber linemen who can’t run block was hoping Frye could fix that ..
