tOSU @ Michigan State, Tues 1/7 @ 9p ET, ESPN

Ironically this game sold me on the Buckeyes at least being a Top 5 team, hell they may be the #3 team. To be a missed Shannon Scott layup away from stealing one at MSU after being down 17? Of course I would have loved the win but, quite frankly, I was praying we didn't get blown out. Bucks showed me far more in defeat today than they've shown me all season.

Heck of a comeback last night, but man does that missed layup by Scott at the end of regulation sting. He made a heck of a play on the ball to get the steal and he had plenty of time to get the layup off before the buzzer, but it seemed that he went up with the wrong hand (his right, on the left side of the hoop), which kept him from shielding the ball from the defender with his body, and allowed Appling to get a piece of the shot.

And had Payne tried to rebound the ball instead of just knocking it out of the way, Thompson may have been able to grab it and slam it in. So close.

They are elite ... everywhere in the half court except from beyond the 3 point line.
The Buckeyes are not elite in the half court, nor elite in any way offensively.

Their half-court offense relies on Craft creating chaos by drives either in the lane or along the baseline, with kick-outs to open players. Those kick-outs last night were going out of bounds rather than to their intended targets. That won't usually happen, but elite offenses usually have players able to get their own shots. The only guy we have who is able to do that fairly regularly is Lenzelle, though Ross can usually do it if his head isn't buried up his butt. Marc Loving looks like he'll get to the point where he can do it, though. We'll get there, and next season's team should be much better in this regard ... and probably won't be nearly as good on D.

None of this means I think the Buckeyes are not an elite team overall. They remind me a lot of last year's Louisville team, which had a pretty good run as I recall.

When they are attacking the rack like they did at the end last night - be it Craft, Scott, Smith, Ross or whoever, they can play with anyone. The offense becomes stagnant when you have 3 or 4 of them standing at the 3 point line waiting for a pass. That needs to end for this team to take that next step. When they attack the basket you get frenzied comebacks like what we've seen against Ntre Ame and at Sparty. When they don't and certainly when they couple their usual poor 3 point shooting with 20+ turnovers, you see what you did last night for 32 minutes.

If Q gets more consistent and Amir can develop some post offense, I absolutely think this is a team as capable of winning it as teams in the past. Hell, even if Loving starts to get more confidence and more minutes that might suffice. With the defense we play, we really don't have to score a whole lot to win. I was concerned about any team with a post presence but Amir dominated Payne anytime he tried to score around the bucket...I'm very encouraged there because we know our guards and Thompson can blanket anyone, so getting the post defense and rebounding is huge too.

Syracuse, Creighton and Duke are the teams that look to me to be "elite" offensively, but their defenses do not measure up to the Bucks. Kentucky and Okie State are pretty good on O also.

kenpom has us ranked 61st in offensive efficiency, which is a bit better than mediocre IMO.

I think the kenpom stats are heavily influenced by how horrible (34% is horrible) this team is at shooting the 3.

Duke isn't elite offensively - Ntre Ame showed us that as did Arizona and even scUM. When Dook doesn't hit their 3s, they're done because they are not good enough defensively to make up the difference. Syracuse scored all of 49 points against Cryami - a team that lost by 11 to Nebraska - Syracuse is a lot like Ohio State in that they win games on the defensive end. Creighton might be a good example.

I just watched the replay of the final seconds in regulation it looked like Scott floated the ball like he thought maybe time was going to run out instead of just taking it up and laying it off the backboard or using the under side of the rim as protection......sigh...tough to watch again I felt this loss all day at work today. Hard to get over.

So, I was as impressed with the last 7:06 as I was unimpressed with the first 32:54.

I would think after last night that Thompson and Loving will see their minutes on the rise as long as a) Loving plays defense like he did last night and b) Thompson plays with the same intensity. Loving is simply a better basketball player than Q.

As to be "bothered" by the loss? I don't let things like a game bother me nor do I dwell on them. Plus it was a loss to a really good team. You're going to lose your share of those games.

Ross and Lenzelle were used to the tighter officiating used in every game but this one. They got manhandled when putting the ball on the floor and both got frustrated and they ended up on the bench when the run started...
Yes, most definitely this game was officiated differently than the vast majority of games this year. Which is one reason to disregard the results to some extent.

You can't disregard the bad shooting. As I said, 4 for 18 from 3 is only slightly below their season average. That is their fatal flaw.
Its the 18 that was their problem..the 3s tOSU took were for the most part contested..the last 3 for MSU were uncontested. Settling for 3's were the problem..MSU ran on tOSU after the missed 3's. Our defense after makes was effective but MSU got to many run outs on our misses.
