Game Thread tOSU @ Maryland, Oct 4th @ 12pm ET, ABC

Cardale's hurdle was worth the price of admission. The look on the fans who stayed faces was awesome. High fives all around our seats from the Buckeye faithful.

Here's what I don't like: going for it on 4th down up 52-24 inside their five yard line.

If this was M*ch*g*n.. I'm all for it. Go for three.

I thought it was bush league. I don't want to fight with others over it.. It's like, my opinion, man. I get that we need to destroy teams to have a chance to get into the playoffs. I understand our goal line offense needs reps (Jesus Christ how bad is the zone read from the shotgun inside the 5?).

We have a freshman kicker who needs confidence and reps too.. I didn't like 'running it up' in garbage time.

Herman seemed to brain fart sometimes inside the 10, other calls today down there I did like so it's not all bad. I think we need to move someone to FB and install a goal line set. I don't care if its a lineman, LBer, TE or a youngin who has earned it in practice.. Give EZE a lead blocker and allow him to hit the hole quicker. Seems to me some of the shotgun/pistol runs take too long to develop in the shadow of the end zone.
kicking the FG is running up the score in that situation.

I would expect a rebuttal from some posters here, but not you BN27. I won't fight & argue with you guys who disagree with me, but objectively, would you say the same thing if that was Nick Saban or any M*ch*g*n team?

3 points in garbage time is running up the score, but going for 6 isn't.. Got it. Tressel ran scores up for 10 years, Urban is giving the D a chance to stuff us. Makes perfect sense behind S & G glasses.

A better argument would be that Urban realizes we need to blow teams out to sneak back into the playoff picture.

I don't expect our second and third string guys to lay down when they get a chance to play just to keep from running up the score. They want and deserve the opportunity to execute and excel on the field when given the chance to play. We still need to build depth and confidence in these players and have them ready if/when needed. Last time I knew the other teams players were on scholarship as well, so if they don't have the pride in themselves to try to stop us then fuck them and their coaches....

It's pretty much conventional wisdom that in that situation, kicking a FG is the second worst thing you can do in terms of running up the score. Those are 3 easy points that you don't need and shouldn't take. The worst thing would be throwing into the endzone. And if you want to get technical....a play action to a wide open TE who the defense assumed would be blocking (what LSU did to us in the NC game in 07) is worse than a normal passing play. The least "running up the score" play is running straight into the line.

Look at the probability of actually scoring.
FG...probably 90-95%.
Pass to the EZ...no clue, anywhere from 0 to 75%? Complete guess. 0 because the pass could be dropped or defended.
Running straight into the line out of shot gun....0-25%. Another guess...but both teams know what is coming...just stuff the line and you prevent a score.

If it's Nick Saban or any Michigan team, I'd be pissed if they did anything BUT run it right into the line like we did. Nothing to do with style points for a playoff run...it's just the least demoralizing thing you can do to a team outside of taking a knee (which is probably still pretty demoralizing).

So, then you think Cardale should be passing the ball - instead of QB run left, QB run right, QB jump over the defense?

I understand the guys should be able to play, but don't pretend that the play calling doesn't change in a blowout.

I disagree, but do see where you are coming from and appreciate your response & backing up your opinion BN27.

Why not, what happens if JT (heaven forbid) goes down? Do you want Cardale to have thrown the ball some in live game situations and be able to look at the reads or do you want to just leave it to happenstance that he will know what to do and where to go with the ball? Do you want the players being coached up and learning via what occurs? Do you want the defense working on technique and understanding the calls, especially in the back 7 or just laying off?

EDIT: This is a very young team, building for both today and the future. They don't need to necessarily score with a FG or pass into the end zone, but I am all for them having at it while they are on the field.

Of course I want our backup to have as many reps as possible. My point was simply, what you were claiming - the whole they have scholarships, fuck the other team crap - isn't true.

Isn't true for who, the coaches? I didn't see us stopping when it came to PSU last year and the game was in hand. In fact, I recall Urban being criticized for contesting the spot after a play. Maybe, it just depends on who we are playing 8D

Again, I don't expect them to intentionally try to run it up at the end of the game by kicking a FG or throwing into the endzone with a couple of minutes left, but between the 20's I say have it and if a score happens so be it.
