tOSU Football Walk Ons (Official Thread)

Orlando Pace's son will be joining the program as a walk-on.

“I’m so proud of all the work that he’s put in, because the process is a lot tougher than most people think,” Orlando Pace told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Benjamin Hochman.

Jalen Pace had three scholarship offers on the table from Dayton, Quincy and Lindenwood University, and he will bring some high-level character to the Buckeyes' program, his head coach says.

“(Jalen is a) warm, really nice, unassuming young man,” MICDS head coach Fred Bouchard told Hochman. “It’s clear he’s been instilled with the right character traits by his parents that will last Jalen’s lifetime.”

Buckeyes reserve quarterback retires from football
Just days before Ohio State begins spring practice, one of its quarterbacks has announced he is leaving football.

Buckeyes walk-on quarterback Danny Vanatsky is retiring from football to pursue other opportunities in his life. He made the announcement public on his Twitter account Tuesday afternoon.

“With just one semester left until I graduate, I have decided to hang up the cleats for the Buckeyes,” Vanatsky said in his Tweet. “This was one of the toughest decisions of my life, but I am ready to move on from college football and pursue other interests.”

Danny Vanatsky just finished a three-year career as a walk-on quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He earned three Big Ten championship rings, two pairs of Gold Pants, and was part of two College Football Playoff teams.

He joins host Tom Orr to discuss what life is like as a walk-on at a college football powerhouse.

Not much of a surprise. He got a free education from a great school. From talking to his parents, this was all about getting a headstart on his coaching career. That's why he chose OSU, a place he knew he probably wouldn't get any actual PT, but could learn from some of the best coaches in America.

2021 Norwalk Kicker/Punter Garrison Smith Commits To Ohio State As Preferred Walk-On

The 5-foot-8 and 175-pound Smith, who is considered by Kornblue Kicking to be the No. 10 kicker and No. 12 punter in the country for the class of 2021, was previously committed to walking on at Michigan State but had a change of heart.

A two-time all-state selection, Smith finished his high school career with 32 field goals, including four field goals from beyond 50 yards. His career long is 57 yards, which is the fifth-longest field goal in Ohio High School Athletic Association history.

Smith initially chose the Spartans over a walk-on opportunity at Cincinnati, as well as scholarship offers from Fordham, Old Dominion, South Dakota and Tiffin.

It may be a bogus comparison, but watching the "Rudy" movie sets the standard (for me at least) as to the life of a walk-on. They go through the hits and drills like the scholarship players, but pay their own tuition/books/room/board, and don't have the advantage of a training table. This is the look of a true amateur athlete, that plays the game for the love of it.

BUCKEYES ADD ANOTHER ROCKWALL WR AS PWO

The latest preferred walk-on commitment for Ohio State came this past week from Corban Cleveland, a wide receiver from Rockwall, Texas.

If Rockwall sounds familiar, that’s because it’s also the hometown of Ohio State scholarship wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. They played at different high schools, as Smith-Njigba played at Rockwall High School while Cleveland played at Rockwall Heath. According to his head coach Mike Spradlin, though, Cleveland shares some of the same qualities that have positioned Smith-Njigba to be Ohio State’s starting slot receiver in 2021.

WALK-ON DEFENSIVE BACK ANDREW MOORE SHEDS BLACK STRIPE

Moore, of Cleveland Heights High School, was part of the 2020 freshman class and committed to Ohio State as a preferred walk-on back in October of 2019. Playing for the Buckeyes was a dream for Moore from a very young age.

“This whole moment is just so surreal for me,” Moore told Eleven Warriors in 2019. “Like I said before, I grew up in an Ohio State family so this was something I wanted to do at a young age.”
