Columbus- Ohio State could be prepared to switch from the quarter system to a semester-based academic calendar in the next few years, and the change could save a few basketball scholarships.
Dr. E. Gordon Gee has been in favor of the change since his first tenure at Ohio State and reiterated the stance when he returned last fall. The athletic department would seem to favor that move, aware that the current quarter setup puts Ohio State in a pinch when players like Greg Oden and Kosta Koufos leave for the NBA.
When the NCAA released its Academic Progress Rates (APR) on Tuesday for all universities and sports, OSU's 909 score for the basketball team fell below the necessary 925 standard. But the Buckeyes avoided losing a scholarship for this coming season by presenting an academic improvement plan the NCAA accepted. However, the problem of watching players withdraw from OSU, which holds classes into June, in order to prepare for and compete in May NBA tryout camps can't be solved by hiring more learning specialists.

The Ohio State men's basketball program will not face immediate sanctions even though its four-year Academic Progress Rate is below the minimum set by the NCAA.

Ohio State athletics faculty representative John Bruno said Tuesday the NCAA has conditionally approved a waiver submitted by the university on behalf of the men's basketball program, petitioning against the possible loss of a scholarship. In the petition, Ohio State outlined a plan to improve academic performance and raise the team's APR score.

"We had to set several benchmarks the program and the department would achieve within a fixed period of time," Bruno said. "The time period was not specifically outlined, but we are interpreting it as our APR score next year will be scrutinized very carefully. We're treating it as a one-year conditional waiver."

The bad news for the Ohio State men's basketball program is that its Academic Progress Rate remains well below the 925 threshold deemed acceptable by the NCAA. Two years ago, the program's four-year average score was 911. This year, it's 909.
The good news is, it should be trending upward soon. For the 2006-07 school year, the program's score was 932, the highest it has been since the NCAA introduced the APR four years ago.
"We have some challenges with basketball. We think we have a great plan in place, (and) we're moving in the right direction," John Bruno, the university's faculty athletics representative, said yesterday after the NCAA released its latest APR data.
A program's APR score is an average of its scores for the past four years, in this case through the 2006-07 school year. Men's basketball and rifle were the only Ohio State sports to score below 925, which the NCAA equates to a 60 percent graduation rate.

I will reiterate what I have said the Basketball Recruiting thread that I am very concerned about our APR next year with Kostas leaving this Spring without completing his coursework, Wallace transferring, and the possibility of BJ leaving next season and possibly Buford. I think we will lose one scholarship at the least because of KK.

Sometimes the price of winning has prepaid with the price of losing unfortunately. I know that going to semesters would help out greatly but that is a 2-3-year process once the Board of Trustees agrees to go that route.

They will walk up on the podium for a handshake from commissioner David Stern with dollar signs in their eyes.
The NBA draft is Thursday night, and for most of the players, it will be the culmination of a dream.
But for the colleges they've left behind, there often is a cost. This year, most of the top picks are expected to be freshmen. Some, such as Ohio State's Kosta Koufos, are leaving more than fond memories to their former schools. These one-and-done players are also bequeathing them a potential headache. Their departure could contribute to a loss of scholarships.
That's because two rules changes intended to promote academics are clashing. In 2005, the NCAA instituted the Academic Progress Rate, which establishes a minimum score at which universities lose scholarships for inadequate progress toward graduation for their student-athletes. The next year, the NBA prohibited the drafting of high school players.

Screw him. Very understanding on his part. It would be interesting to compare the academic standards of Memphis against those of Ohio State's. The only thing that I can hope for is that maybe the NCAA will cut some slack to institutions, such as Ohio State, that are on quarters.

The possibility of grading coaches with an APR is discussed.

Having accountability for the coaches sounds good, but this would be a nightmare to administer equitably.

The NCAA is weighing whether to compile individual academic progress rates (APRs) for coaches, who some officials argue are responsible for recruiting athletes to a school, know and work with them most closely - and thus should be held singularly accountable for their academic performance and graduation.

A personal APR would become part of coach's record, available for recruits, parents and prospective employers to evaluate along with wins and other competitive and personal criteria.

The move also could attach APR-related penalties to coaches. Under a show-cause order, those leaving teams hit by scholarship cuts and other sanctions would have to argue why the sanctions shouldn't follow them to a new job.

The proposal, considered and discarded after the NCAA began compiling team APRs four years ago, was revived by the association's Division I Board of Directors in April. It asked the NCAA's top academic panel to give it another look.

The Committee on Academic Progress will take up the issue when it meets early next month in San Diego, and the board meets again in August.

Coach Matta talks about academic performance in response to a question.

According to Matta that head start on the academic side of college seems to be paying off for the men's basketball team.

"When we got here the graduation rate for men's basketball was very low. We're up to 75 percent and hopefully that will go higher. We've taken the team GPA from about 2.3 to 2.9. I like the direction we're going with the academics," he said.

Kosta Koufos dealt Ohio State a blow when he withdrew from classes in the spring quarter after his freshman season to head to the NBA.


The Ohio State men's basketball team will lose two scholarships because of a deficient Academic Progress Rate score, the NCAA announced yesterday.

The penalty takes effect immediately, meaning Ohio State will have no additional scholarships available for next season.

Teams must have an APR over a four-year period of 925 -- which translates roughly to a 50 percent graduation rate -- to avert penalties. Ohio State's APR for the past four years is 911, which is between the 20th and 30th percentiles for men's basketball among Division I schools.

It had been a foregone conclusion that Ohio State would lose one scholarship, but the school hoped it might avert the loss of a second.

I guess if there was a blessing to this it is the fact that it happened this year when we were probably not going to give out another scholarship for 2009. Hopefully, guys will learn from this and not leave during the middle of a quarter. It will be nice when semesters roll around and we won't have to worry about this anymore... hopefully.

I need a biting tongue icon for this post.
