Game Thread tOSU at USC, Sat. Oct. 31st, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

And I normally criticize day for not playing to his teams strengths and covering their weaknesses...

But the one instance he tries to do it, he thought they would be able to run down USCs throat on the first buckeye drive, go up 7 and then protect Fahey by limiting how many times he passed by running the ball and running out the clock. But USC scored first and he kept with the game plan. But then they went up two scores, and he kept with the game plan. Then they came out at half time. And kept with the game plan.

They were so absolutely positive they would come in and push USC around that there was NO PLAN B AT ALL! I want to see, between the end of the 2nd quarter and into the third quarter, how many actual minutes Fahey went without throwing the football. Your QB is going to have ZERO confidence in himself when the OC and HC show zero confidence in him. And that's going to lead to him pressing even more than he would otherwise when trailing in a game. And when you're six plays into a drive and behind, he's going to lock up and try ULTRA HARD when he had to make a pass attempt. With a young QB you throw on the early downs when the defense is playing the run. Day did the exact opposite of that. Fahey was getting very few attempts and then when he got a chance to throw, it was a potential drive ending situation.

The term coaching malpractice is popular and extremely overused, but that's exactly what Day's handling of Fahey was today.
Was it Day or Smith?

Imagine that, you're teaching your kid how to ride a bike.

But instead of having your kid fall off a bike and get right back on, surrounding the bike with mattresses and putting training wheels on the front and back. You tell the kid it's a normal bike and that you have complete confidence in them. But that he shouldn't peddle the bike when he gets on it. The kid is not only going to know that you have zero confidence in them, their self esteem is going to take a second shot because they know that you think they're a complete idiot. And he's going to be a fucking mess when he actually has to get on the bike and ride it. And you'd have been better off just letting the kid fall off the fucking bike in the first place.

That is my best metaphor for Ryan Day's treatment of Luke Fahey today.

Honestly, I expected a loss between either IU or USC with a lot younger team this year. Fahey reminds me a lot of…….Craig Krenzel. Hopefully this game will continue to build his confidence. He does have moxie and did avoid interceptions, but he needs to step into his throws and stop overthrowing his receivers. I hate games in which we have more total yards and lose. Should never happen. It seems to happen to us quite often. Look at most of our losers compared to our total yards vs the opposition, and you’ll scratch your head like I do.

That era is long gone. Craig Krenzel can't win in 2026. Even so, Jim Tressel had Krenzel run the ball.

Fahey is supposedly mobile compared to Sayin. Did we see that at all? Nope.

Day is no Tressell. He's not even as good as Cooper.

130 yards more. FG are nice but won’t win you the game
